About the role

BCE is committed to supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of our students so they can productively engage in learning and lead hope-filled lives. An essential feature of enabling this to occur is to build the knowledge and skills of all staff, especially in secondary schools, to provide initial support or “first aid” to students who present with mental health concerns. This goal is further enabled through the implementation of whole-school approaches to promoting mental health and wellbeing, underpinned by an overarching BCE Student Wellbeing framework. This includes targeted curriculum activities, to create a supportive school environment that develops and sustains all students personal and social capabilities and promotes positive mental health and wellbeing.

The Project Officer: Student Wellbeing (Youth Mental Health) is a 12 months project role with a focus on building the capacity of staff through training to better support the social and emotional wellbeing of students. The successful role holder would be required to travel across the Archdiocese of Brisbane (South East Queensland) and stay overnight at times. Travel and accommodation costs will be reimbursed. Own vehicle is required to travel.

Your Project Focus Areas include :

  • Deliver learning to secondary school staff across BCE in Youth Mental Health First Aid training or similar evidence-based mental health education*
  • Deliver learning to upper primary school staff across BCE in Safeminds or similar evidence-based mental health education. *
  • Deliver learning to school staff about the implementation of BCE’s student wellbeing framework.
  • Support schools in the development of their whole school approach to student wellbeing including mapping existing wellbeing practices.
  • Support school leadership teams to build the capacity of classroom teachers to better understand how a continuum of multi-tiered systems of support enhances student learning and wellbeing.
  • Work with school leadership teams to develop sustainable structures and processes to aid staff in middle leadership positions with pastoral care, wellbeing, and student behaviour support.
  • Liaise with external agencies (e.g., Be You, EdLinq, Headspace) to develop ongoing relationships between these agencies and schools across BCE
  • Assist schools in the effective use of BCE enterprise systems, including the Engage Student Support System and BI tool.
  • Provide analysis of student wellbeing measures to schools and systems and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Establish self-sustaining learning communities of staff in pastoral, wellbeing, and student behaviour support roles across schools and provide further opportunities for collaboration.
  • Identify gaps in BCE wellbeing resources and develop innovative and accessible responses to support schools (e.g., curated websites, service providers, online training modules etc).
  • Collaborate with Cluster Managers and Education Officers – Student Wellbeing to identify priorities for targeted support within clusters.

*Consideration may be given for the successful applicant to be supported in training for the delivery of these program

To be successful in this role you will have:
Qualifications:

  • Accreditation to deliver Youth Mental Health First Aid, Safe Minds or similar evidence-based training packages suitable for school staff
  • Qualifications in either education with Master’s level qualifications in Guidance and Counselling or a four-year Australian Psychology Accreditation Council approved psychology course, ideally with post-graduate Masters level qualifications in psychology. Preference is for qualifications in both areas.
  • Registration as a Teacher with QCT or as a Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority. Preference is for dual registration.
  • Qualify for membership of appropriate professional associations such as the Australian Psychological Society, Australian Association of Psychologists (Inc), and/or the Queensland Guidance and Counselling Association

Work Experience:

  • Five years’ experience in working in student wellbeing as a Guidance Counsellor or similar position within a school environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing specialised advice and support to schools on the implementation of effective and expected practices in student wellbeing and engagement, student behaviour support, and school guidance and counselling.
  • Delivering high quality, engaging professional learning experiences to large and small groups.
  • Plan and deliver project goals.
