Mental Health Official Visitor Department of Justice

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Government of Tasmania is seeking expressions of interest from people with relevant experience who wish to be considered for appointment as Mental Health Official Visitors. Mental Health Official Visitors conduct a regular program of visits to all approved hospitals and the secure mental health unit in Tasmania (the Wilfred Lopes Centre). Visitors monitor the adequacy and quality of approved facilities, receive complaints from or concerning patients and refer complaints to the Principal Official Visitor. They also check that patients are being informed of and accorded their rights. Visitors report suspected contraventions of the Mental Health Act 2013 or any other matters requiring investigation to the Principal Official Visitor.

Appointments are made by the Principal Official Visitor for a period of up to three years. Mental Health Official Visitors receive remuneration at a base rate of $35 per hour and are reimbursed reasonable expenses directly incurred in the performance of their duties.

The Mental Health Official Visitors Program is administered by the Office of the Ombudsman and Health Complaints Commissioner. Positions will be based in the North, North West and South of the state.

Please note that applicants who are being considered for appointment will be required to undertake a national criminal history check and a Tasmanian registration for working with vulnerable people.
