Drummond Street Services (DS) is a not-for-profit agency that provides family services, mental health and wellbeing support, relationship counselling, parent support and education for families, children and young people that reflect the diversity of the communities across our different locations. 

Drummond Street has invested over 130 years in the development and delivery of innovative services that strengthen families and communities with a strong focus on evidence-based/informed practice and across the prevention and early intervention spectrum of universal and targeted support.

Drummond Street has also played a crucial role providing specialist support to members of the LGBTQI community for over thirty years through its Queerspace program.


Drummond Street;s Ready Steady Family! Program has a fantastic opportunity for a part time (.4EFT) counsellor or psychologist to join the team at our Collingwood and Carlton locations.

The aim of the Ready Steady Family! Program is to promote positive family relationships and mental health. Clients will come from diverse backgrounds including a range of disadvantaged settings such as housing estates and  CALD/refugee communities. This position is supported by a team of parent coaches and early childhood specialists who will also be working with clients to strengthen mental health. Reporting to the Ready Steady Family! Program Manager, you’ll be responsible for the delivery of high quality mental health counselling to those navigating the transition to parenthood. 


Providing face to face, outreach and/or on-line counselling and therapeutic support to a wide range of families and sole parents who are expecting a baby or have an infant up to 2 years old. 

You will be:

  • Providing support to reduce risk and increase protective factors for individuals and couples transitioning to parenthood
  • Conducting basic psycho-social assessments of family-based risk and protective factors associated with child mental health outcomes
  • Utilising evidence-based prevention and early intervention strategies that are holistic and family centred
  • Referring clients to educational and therapeutic groups and seminars
  • Occasionally co-facilitating training to community members, partners and the broader sector about how to identify mental health issues in new parents and how best to support them.


To qualify, you will hold relevant tertiary qualifications in the fields of social work, counselling, family therapy or psychology, as well as a strong working background in the mental health and/or family services sectors. Demonstrated knowledge and application of a range of therapeutic approaches for individuals, couples, and families is essential.

This role is well suited to someone who is organised, flexible, client-focused and who can effectively manage tasks and deadlines while maintaining a high degree of self-awareness and professionalism. You will also demonstrate a positive, creative and collaborative approach to the delivery of support services. The expectation is that you will see four or more clients per day and maintain professional case notes. We have team members who will assist with case work tasks.
