Sitting within one of Victoria’s six regional health centres, Barwon Health serves the community of Greater Geelong and beyond. We serve over 500,000 people through the efforts of over 8,000 staff and more than 1200 volunteers.  Our Mental Health Drugs & Alcohol Service is entering a new phase of co-design of our service system with people who access our services and our wider community. This will build on our nationally recognized unique cultural approach to the challenges of recovery oriented service delivery to redesign our service system.

About the new facility

Barwon Heath Mental Health Drugs & Alcohol Service is actively building upon our nationally recognised reputation for innovative clinical programs and integrated models of practice that are client centred, accessible and family inclusive. We have been fortunate enough out of the Royal Commission to have a new 16 bed Older Adult Acute Mental Health Unit developed on our McKellar site. The unit will provide operational space for acute, sub-acute and community mental health care for consumers aged 50 years and older with psychiatric and complex functional needs. This new contemporary designed facility will operate with a model of care that is recovery oriented and trauma informed.

About the Role

We are seeking dynamic, highly motivated senior carer peer workers to be part of the McKellar Mental Healthth & Wellbeing Centre. In this role, you will:

  • Provide one-on-one peer support and facilitate groups
  • Provide peer supervision to MHDAS Peer Workers, and assist them to maintain optimal levels of health and wellbeing.
  • Contribute to MHDAS education activities designed to promote a greater understanding of peer work and the value of lived experience input into the service.

You will draw upon your own lived experience as a carer of someone who has accessed public mental health services, to inform your practice. Your role will involve liaising with the MHDAS clinical teams, relevant to the areas within the service, for example within the emergency department, mental health inpatient units, drugs and alcohol service and the community.
