Position Summary:
A vacancy exists in the above unit for a highly motivated Youth Counsellor with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team. Our progressive and innovative team offers development opportunities for our staff and a caring environment for the delivery of high quality patient centred care. The successful applicant will be expected to be able to deliver high quality, professional treatment to young people who use alcohol and other drugs.

The Youth Counsellor will work as part of the Burton Street Centre, Alcohol and Drug Service, St Vincent’s Health Sydney. Service delivery will be provided both onsite at St Vincent’s Hospital and within partner organisations. This position is responsible for building and enhancing partnerships with internal and external services, engaging young people and/or their families, in brief intervention, case management, and counselling based treatment as well as providing early intervention and harm minimisation.

The vacancy is open to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens who hold a valid New Zealand passport, Australian permanent residents and those non-residents deemed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to be eligible to work in Australia only.

Selection Criteria:
1. Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia.
2. Relevant tertiary qualifications in psychology, social work or other relevant behavioural sciences and eligibility for membership of the relevant professional association.
3. Demonstrated advanced relevant clinical experience including assessment, brief interventions and counselling of clients with drug and alcohol problems and co-existing mental health issues.
4. Demonstrated advanced relevant clinical experience working with adolescents and young people and utilising age appropriate and evidence based treatment modalities.
5. Demonstrated understanding of harm reduction and strengths based approaches in working with substance use
6. Demonstrated capacity to facilitate therapeutic groups.
7. Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication as well as interpersonal skills as well as High level computer skills: Microsoft Office, Patient Record Systems.
8. Current NSW Category 3 driving license
