About the role:

The Cassowary Coast Child Trauma Counselling Service provides specialist counselling, support and education with children, young people and their families who have experienced sexual, physical, verbal, and emotional abuse; and developmental, complex, and cumulative trauma.

Salary and Conditions: 

HOURS: 38 hours per week
SALARY: Level 5.1 SCHCDSI Award ($44.92 /hr)
+ Generous salary sacrifice packaging arrangements (up to $15,900 tax free plus meals and entertainment package of up to $2,650).

Essential Requirements:  

• Tertiary qualification in a relevant field (i.e., Psychology, Counselling, Social Work)
• Experience related to the delivery of trauma-informed counselling services for people who experience complex trauma, with a specific focus on children and young people
• Possession of an open driver’s license 
• Possession of a ‘Working with Children’ Suitability card and NDIS worker screening suitability
• Covid-19 Vaccination: Engagement is subject to the person fully satisfying the COVID-19 vaccination requirement under the CSCI COVID-19 Vaccination policy.

Key Responsibilities: 

• Provide counselling and therapy with children, young people and their families within a trauma-informed, child-centred practice and evidence framework 
• Conduct intake and assessments, including reviews of referral information, and identifying strengths, vulnerabilities and needs
• Develop counselling plans with clients, which include goals of counselling and are continuously monitored and evaluated for effectiveness
• Provide support and education to families of children and young people who have experienced trauma and link family members and sub-groups in with other appropriate support and/or counselling services
• Maintain accurate, up to date and appropriate client records including assessments and counselling plans, statistics and reports on specified formats and in relevant databases as per organisational policies and procedures, legislative and funding requirements
• Develop, implement and facilitate group programs (educational and therapeutic) for the prevention/early intervention of child trauma and targeting protective behaviour and problem sexual behaviour education 
• Provide culturally sensitive services including with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and children from other cultural backgrounds 
• Provide sensitive services with children and young people with sexual orientation and gender identity considerations who have experienced trauma
• Provide education on issues related to child trauma within the broader Cassowary Coast community
• Develop and coordinate special projects (eg Child Protection Week events)
• Maintain professional and ethical work practices, knowledge and skills and participate in professional development activities
• Participate in regular supervision with the Child & Family Programs Team Leader or their delegate and attend staff and team meetings as required

Selection Criteria:

1. Knowledge and experience in the use of current and relevant theoretical frameworks in relation to working with trauma, family violence and sexual abuse 
2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in best practice counselling skills using child-centred approaches
3. Demonstrated experience in facilitation and group work with children, young people, and parent/carers
4.  Knowledge of and ability to work collaboratively with other government and non-government agencies
5. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written including high computer literacy skills
6. Demonstrated engagement skills including capacity to engage with  LGBTIQA+, First Nations, and people of colour in a way that is affirming
7.  Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team environment as well as independently
