PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION

The purpose of the Better Futures Program is to provide culturally appropriate support for Aboriginal young people transitioning to independence/interdependence from out of home care, including kinship care from 15 & 9 months – 21 years of age, and addressing the social marginalisation often experienced by young people leaving care. The position is a regional position covering Southwest Victoria. 

The Better Futures Case Worker facilitates and provides:

  • Cultural advice and consultation on the transition needs of individual Aboriginal young people whilst they are on custody, guardianship or long-term guardianship orders whether placed with Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal agencies.
  • Active support to Aboriginal young people who have left care up to 21 years of age including facilitating access to Better Futures and Home stretch brokerage.
  • Liaison with regions, mainstream Post Care Support, Information and Referral Services (PCSIRS) and Housing & Community Building (H&CB) Leaving Care Housing and Support.
  • Collaboration with providers to build the capacity of these services to meet the needs of Aboriginal young people and ensure equitable access by Aboriginal young people requiring these supports.

THE IDEAL PERSON FOR THIS ROLE

Essential

  • Experience working with Aboriginal youth, providing practical and culturally safe advice and encouragement.
  • Sound knowledge of Cultural Safety in practice and a willingness to learn.
  • Understanding and commitment to Aboriginal health, Aboriginal culture, and the philosophy and practice of Aboriginal Community Control.
  • Develop case management skills, including assessment skills and developing and implementing action plans.
  • Relevant qualification (minimum Cert III Community services) or progress towards completion.
  • Ability to effectively network and collaborate with a wide range of Government and non-Government agencies.
  • Sound knowledge of a range of community services, education, health, and housing services available.
  • Experience working in a Family & Community Services environment, including Youth Justice.
  • Excellent written, analytical, and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound administration, file management and computer skills.
  • Possession of a current valid Victorian driver’s license. 

Desirable 

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Experience in working in a not-for-profit organisation, health setting, or in the justice system.
