We are looking for Mental Health Workers to join two of our specialist family law services.
Our Family Law Service for Aboriginal Communities (FamAC) provides outreach, casework, community legal education and duty services at court to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The team also:
- supports and trains our other family law and care and protection lawyers who work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families
- advocates on systemic issues that affect those families
Our Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) is a specialist team of lawyers, domestic violence case workers, mental health workers and financial counsellors who work together to help clients who have experienced domestic and family violence with their legal and other needs.
We use a trauma-informed approach to provide advice and assistance, duty services at court, some complex casework and community legal education.

About the role
You will:
- support and assist eligible clients to make, and be involved in, decisions about their mental health to minimising the negative impacts and re-traumatisation associated with engaging in the child protection system
- provide support, referral assistance, risk assessment, safety planning, support in attending Court as well as other services and clinical expertise
About you
The successful applicant will have experience working with clients with psychosocial and identified mental health needs. You will also have experience working with clients who have been impacted by domestic and family violence.
The successful FamAC applicant will also have an awareness of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and be able to demonstrate cultural sensitivity. You may have also worked with clients who have a history of being in custody.
Essential requirements
You must:
- be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before you start
- hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency (essential for ongoing vacancies) or a valid working visa (for temporary vacancies)
- have 5 years minimum relevant experience
- have professional qualification and registration as Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, Registered Nurse or Psychologist or Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health)
- be willing to have a Criminal Record Check and Working with Children Check done
The Family Law Division have a number of roles where it is a statutory obligation for staff to hold a valid Working with Children Check. If you are successfully placed on the Talent Pool, please note you will be required to provide your Working with Children Check details prior to commencement in any role requiring the check.
