Using your experience and skill set, work within a multi-disciplinary Public Intoxication Team! 

About the Program

Primary Care Connect is proud to be a partner in delivering the new Public Intoxication Program, which will provide an innovative, health-based response to people intoxicated in the Greater Shepparton Region, in line with the Victorian Government’s plan to decriminalise public intoxication. 

As part of our team, you will respond to calls for support by developing and delivering outreach support to intoxicated individuals, transporting them to places of safety, and creating health and social care pathways and broader prevention strategies. 

You will know the importance of providing effective interventions, client advocacy and implementing the principles of harm minimisation.

About the Role

The Public Intoxication Outreach worker will work within a multi-disciplinary Public Intoxication Outreach Team (PIOT). The PIOT will provide an ‘on the ground’ response to approach and assess the health and wellbeing of people who are intoxicated in public.  

This position reports to the PIOT Team Leader and works within the PIOT. It is also expected that this position works within the larger Primary Care Connect team and networks with external organisations. 

PIOT workers will then help to organise transport for an intoxicated person to travel to a safe place for them to rest and recover. Intoxicated people will also be provided with follow-up support. 

This new approach will increase access to culturally responsive services and provide longer term connection to wraparound supports such as alcohol and other drug, mental health, homelessness, or family violence services. 

The position requires working overnight shifts on a rostered basis. Shifts are from 9pm-5am Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 5pm-1am Sunday and on call from 5pm-1am Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. A daytime shift from 9am-5pm will be scheduled fortnightly.    

Key Selection Criteria

Essential  

• Qualification in a relevant discipline such as Alcohol and Other Drugs, Nursing, Community Development, Mental Health or equivalent  
• Knowledge of health and welfare issues relevant to clients with Alcohol and Other Drug issues  
• Demonstrated experience in intake, assessment and case management functions  
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including demonstrated experience in liaising with a wide range of internal and external clients 
• A strong capacity to work in challenging situations, including skills in de-escalation 
• Professional and personal alignment with Primary Care Connect core values  

Desirable 

• Demonstrated ability to self-manage a complex workload, handle multiple tasks, prioritise and delegate where necessary to meet prescribed timeline with available resources 
• Experience in working with people who are experiencing alcohol and other drug issues, homelessness, family violence or mental health issues  
• Applicants with lived experience and/or from diverse communities are strongly encouraged to apply
