Counsellor – Katanning South West Aboriginal Medical Service

JOB DESCRIPTION

SWAMS’ Mental Health team places a strong focus on a person-centred approach and a collaborative working culture to achieve the best possible outcomes for our mob. We are seeking a passionate Counsellor with a high level of skill to join our team.

The Counsellor’s role is to provide a culturally safe space, where people can come and feel they are treated with dignity and respect. Part of the counsellor’s role may also include some group facilitation delivery.

As SWAMS deliver counselling support around Mental Health and AoD issues, having knowledge across many domains is desired. The successful candidate will be required to provide a level of case management when required, this will include a willingness to work collaboratively across organisations. Good computer skills are required for electronic case file writing and other data entry. The role of counsellor will also include supporting other activities the team are involved in, such as health promotion initiatives and events.

SWAMS is looking a Counsellor to provide services in our Katanning clinic 2 days a week.

Specific requirements of this position include but are not limited to;

Essential Criteria

  • Must hold a Diploma of Counselling or higher or recognised equivalent
  • High level of counselling and case management skills
  • An understanding and respect of the past practices and current issues that impact on the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to deliver a strengths-based service incorporating narrative, cognitive, solution-focused and community development approaches to vulnerable individuals and families
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to effectively liaise with key stakeholders and build strong relationships
  • Ability to collect, analyse and maintain client data
  • Demonstrated sound level of computer and oral communication skills, including writing clear case notes and other data collation
  • Current WA Driver’s License
  • Current National Police Certificate, or the ability to obtain

Desired Criteria

  • Hold accreditation with the AASW or specific field of service governing body, with the possession of a Medicare Provider Number (or working towards);
