VU Online Master of Child and Adolescent Mental Health 

Victoria University (VU) Online has launched a new online masters-level health program; Master of Child and Adolescent Mental Health. This accelerated degree is offered in VU’s revolutionary postgraduate block model where students take 1 unit at a time in 7-week blocks across 6 study periods a year. 

The Opportunity 

An Online Unit Facilitator, managed and trained by LINC Education (www.linceducation.com), provides a high level of 1:1 student support to postgraduate nursing students. This support includes engaging in discussions about unit content, moderating online discussion forums, marking assessments, and providing feedback to students. The position requires deep knowledge in the mental health domain and best practices in online education delivery.

  • MASTER OF CHILD AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH
  1. HNO6014 Introduction to Child and Adolescent Mental Health​ (Jan’ 23 – Feb’23)
  2. HNO6015 Child and Adolescent Engagement and Assessment (Feb ’23 – Apr’23)
  • MASTER OF MENTAL HEALTH / MASTER OF MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
  1. HNO6010 Recovery Oriented Mental Health ​(Jan’ 23 – Feb’23)
  2. HNO6011 Biopsychosocial and Cultural Perspectives in Mental Health (Feb ’23 – Apr’23)
  3. HNO7013 Psychological Therapies ​(Feb ’23 – Apr’23)

Roles & Responsibilities

Major responsibilities of the Online Unit Facilitator include

  1. Providing proactive and prompt 1:1 academic support to postgraduate online students via phone, text and email.
  2. Moderating discussion board forums on VU’s LMS.
  3. Attending/viewing nine-unit online class sessions and attending weekly meetings (30 minutes) with the Online Unit Coordinator over the 8-week period.
  4. Attending 3 assessment moderation and calibration meetings.
  5. Marking assessments and providing feedback as per set rubrics within required timelines. 
  6. Successfully undertaking Online Unit Facilitator Training (paid) and regular coaching to improve student support practices.

Remuneration 

Online Unit Facilitators are appointed as independent contractors for one unit at a time during each 7-week study period. Compensation is based on the number of students they support as well as their performance. 

  1. For a standard 25 student allocation, the base compensation is $6400 with a performance-based bonus of up to 20% (total compensation for a top performer of $7700). Online facilitators will be compensated for a minimum load of 15 students ($4200 base compensation, with up to 20% performance-based bonus in addition).
  2. Online facilitators have the flexibility of working from a location of their convenience.
  3. Online facilitators will receive specialised training and ongoing coaching for the role.

Time Commitment

  • Since most online students are working professionals and study in non-office hours, online facilitators must have the flexibility to support students after 5 pm on weekdays (same day response to student emails/texts) and over weekends.
  •  The unit runs over 8-weeks (1-week orientation, 6 teaching weeks and 1 grading week) preceded by 1 week for training related activities.
  • It is anticipated that the online facilitator will be required to spend approximately 125-130 hours over this period assuming a standard allocation of 25 students.

Selection criteria

  1. Masters in Mental Health Program / Master of Mental Health Nursing.
    • Registered Nurse, Midwife (AHPRA registration) or Registered Mental Health Practicing Nurse and knowledge of unit content.
    • PhD and/or Master Degree in Nursing or relevant field (i.e. health-related) plus 5 years’ relevant teaching, research and/or professional experience at the PG level in the last 10 years.
    • Full working rights to be employed within Australia.
  2. Child and Adolescent Mental Health Units 
    • Master (Mental Health or Mental Health related) or PHD degree.
    • Completed an AQF Level 7 Bachelor in a cognate discipline such as Health Science, Social Work, Psychology, Medicine, Counselling, Youth Work or Education.
    • Relevant work experience in the last 5 years.

Desirable

  • Past experience of teaching online at the PG level with impressive student evaluation of teaching reports. 
  • Ability to quickly learn and use technology platforms for interacting with students online.
