The Southport School is a leading Anglican Day and Boarding school for boys situated on the beautiful Nerang River in the heart of the Gold Coast.  The Southport School has been established for 121 years and is committed to providing excellence in leadership, learning and teaching, pastoral care and extra-curricular endeavors within a balanced, holistic Christian environment for young men. The Southport School has a growing enrolment of over 1700 made up of 1074 students in the Senior School, of which approximately 320 are boarder students (Years 7 to 12), and 640-day students in the Preparatory School. 

We are now offering a wonderful opportunity for a graduate Psychologist or School Counsellor to gain experience working in a very busy day and boarding school setting supported by an experienced Psychology team. 

This role whilst delivering counselling and psychological services, will be a member of our Wellbeing Health team and will work closely with our Wellbeing Health Promotions Officer, our Student Deans and our Day and Boarding Housemasters. This role aims to improve student wellbeing and academic success by offering preventative and brief early psychological interventions. This role is highly regarded by our parents and staff and a key component of our pastoral care offering for students in our very busy and diverse school community.

We ask that candidates in their cover letter or application address the following criteria: 

  1. Appropriate Counselling and/or Psychology qualifications and registration with appropriate regulatory authority or association (e.g. AHPRA)
  2. Experience or a desire to engage in individual, family, group and crisis counselling. 
  3. The ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate high level of ethical practice. 
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  5. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and other community stakeholders. 

We are able to offer 10 full time weeks (commencing from 16th January 2023) of school-based experience providing cover for an employee accessing maternity leave in term one. Whilst you are with us, you will be provided onsite professional supervision and the opportunity to learn from exceptional practitioners. You will have access to our state of the art gym, our staff swim lanes, or perhaps you might prefer to have an after work hit on our tennis courts with your colleagues or wind down in our weekly yoga program!  You will see a large boarding school in action, as well as a comprehensive wellbeing health offering for our students; a wonderful opportunity to see best in class in action.
