About us:

Hope Community Services has been a community service in Western Australia for over a century, providing much needed support to people affected by alcohol and other drugs, mental health, youth justice issues and socioeconomic disadvantage. 

This role will be representing Hope Community Service by working with our partner agency, Neami National. 

About the role:

This role will be working with the Mental Health Step Up/Step Down Service. This service provides short-term residential mental health support for people who are either becoming unwell and at risk of being admitted to hospital (step up’ support) or leaving hospital but in need of extra support to transition back into the community (step down’ support).

As the Counsellor/Educator, you will provide alcohol and other drug assessment, counselling, case management, education, and support to Step Up/Step Down consumers. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to undertake Neami training.

You will be responsible for:

·         Delivering respectful, high quality person-centred and strength-based support and counselling to people with complex needs and co-occurring symptoms.

·         Be part of a multidisciplinary team and participate in client lead goal planning meetings.

·         Actively participate in the Step Up/Step Down setting to seek appropriate referrals and increase awareness to the AOD services available.

·         Providing AOD education and support information to clients, stakeholders, and significant others.

·         Using reflective practice, and participate in regular supervision, case review meetings, and professional development.

·         Completing community-based referrals as required and support/prepare consumers to transition from Step Up/Step Down back to the community.

About you:

We are looking for someone with a Tertiary qualifications in health, education, behavioural/social sciences, youth work, health/mental health nursing or equivalent, as well as demonstrated experience in the Alcohol and Other Drug or Mental Health sector. This will ensure you have a sound understanding of the complex needs of clients who experience co-occurring issues.

You will have a strong work ethic, reflecting and improving on your practice, as well as working safely and contributing to team effectiveness. Being a person who is has a person centred, strength-based perspective and empowerment approach will see you do well in this role.

You will to be committed to upholding HOPE’s values and to working in a respectful and culturally secure way with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and individuals

Appointments will be subject to Australian residency/visa, Working with children check, satisfactory National Criminal Record checks, Covid-19 Vaccination records, Current C or A class driver’s license, and suitable work referees
