Give Kids More Opportunities to Thrive as a Paediatric Psychologist Progress Pathways

JOB DESCRIPTION

Let’s skip right to the most important part:

Family is at the centre of what we do, and we have some families that need your help as their new Paediatric Psychologist, pronto! We believe in collaborating to give kids more opportunities to thrive… but we need your help to do it.

👋 I’m Bec, the Clinic Leader, and I’m definitely biaised… but I’m pretty sure Progress Pathways is one of the best places for allied health professionals to work.

To be honest, the job is not all roses and puppy dogs — there is some good news and there is some bad news…

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first:

  • At Progress Pathways you will become an IMPORTANT part of a small team… not just a number in a big team (like some of the bigger allied health companies). You will become a BIG, important, much-needed, valued part of our small team. That means you really have to show up and do your best every day, because we are all in there doing it together (and there’s not a lot of people to hide behind!) We have not had a psychologist on the team before, so your perspective in our multi-disciplinary discussions would be SO valued.

  • The nature of the work means that sometimes you will find yourself navigating a really challenging family, child or situation. Sometimes that feels really hard. But in our small team we make it ALL of our business to support you to support that child. (And we have so many amazing families that we work with!)

Now let’s talk about the good stuff:

1. Our team has the best vibe… and you can be guaranteed that we will only extend an invitation for you to join the team if we think you will be a great fit. We say YES to big laughs, real conversations and Mexican food and NO to unnecessary drama.

2. The work is fun and you won’t get bored. You will probably see the bulk of your clients from our gorgeous (spacious!) clinic OR from our onsite gym if you are working with a child who needs a movement break. You can also mix it up with some local school / kindy / daycare / home visits… or you can run sessions in one of the super-well-resourced gymnasiums we have access to due to our unique working relationship with Delta Gymnastics.

3. I’m not big on stress. So, while I will expect you to work efficiently and get things done, I focus on open communication and clear expectations so you know what it looks like to absolutely nail it in your role. I am growing a team for the long term, so I don’t want you to burn out. Not today, not this week, not this month… never! Our approach to “Billable Hours” (a term you won’t hear at Progress Pathways) reflects this.

4. Your standard work week is designed to suit your life. I don’t have a schedule that you need to comply with. If you want to work some longer days / some shorter days… fine. If you don’t want to work full-time… let’s talk about options! Your schedule should support you to live your best life.

5. We have an “Unlimited CPD” Policy…  we want to invest in you for the long term. If you are hitting your goals in your role then we will pay for any CPD that you want to do! You just need to come back and share what you have learned with the team (the best way to solidify your learning!) and stay on our team long enough for the Progress Pathways families to benefit.

6. You’ll have professional support from multiple modalities. Our team currently encompasses Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy and you will get the best of these modalities sharing support on case management. You will have structured fortnightly multidisciplinary case management. You will have ample opportunities to shadow or collaborate on sessions. We have a shared lunchtime each day, so there is a lot of unstructured professional support that happens too. Oh, and I’ve been an allied health professional for 15 years. You and I will have a quick structured meeting weekly, but I’m in contact with you most days to support you as you need it. By the way, you will also have on-the-ground support from Allied Health Assistants if required.

7. You’ll be incredibly well resourced! We have lots of resources onsite, and our resource library is always growing based on staff requests. We also have a rotating supply of resources coming to us from Delta Gymnastics which encourages us to keep it FRESH with the kids we support.

Now, let’s talk about the job requirements:

1. You need to be the type of person who understands that there is something to learn from every child, and love about every child. We don’t expect you to know everything, and we don’t expect you to be “perfect”. We do expect you to learn from the children you support, lean on your team to share ideas for improvement and keep an “always learning” outlook to the work you do.

2. You are capable of managing your time. Micro-managing is really NOT my jam. I will support you, give suggestions when it’s appropriate and be clear about expectations so you can know how to thrive, but I won’t be checking in on your every move… because that’s not how our team works!

3. You’ll provide quality Psychology care to each child you work with. Families love working with you because you use your clinical skills to develop and implement a plan for the progress of their child. You practise being Dedicated, Playful and an Intelligent Communicator (our Key Characteristics) every day.

4. You’ll support your kids with non-contact client-care tasks (e.g. letter for GP, home program etc) as they arise. Sometimes the kids you support may require help outside of their treatment time. We allow time for this throughout your week. You will use our task-management system to keep track of these client-care tasks.

5. You will support the sustainability of Progress Pathways by operating in the Green Zone. We take a different approach to ‘billable hours’ at Progress Pathways. Rather than a set target you must hit every day, we work with you to develop a ‘zone’ that feels achievable for your level of experience. With a shout out to the Zones of Regulation, our Green Zone allows you to set yourself a weekly / monthly target in which you are a) helping the business be sustainable so we can give kids more opportunities to thrive, while you b)  feel great within your role. You can then self-manage your time to work within that zone. This is not a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ situation!

6. You are willing to pitch in and support your team mates, and you know you will be supported in turn! Working on a small team means sometimes we pitch in to do something when we can see it needs to be done or that someone needs support, even if it’s not in our direct role.

7. You have ideas to make progress at Progress Pathways. We are a new business, we opened early in 2022. We are a work in progress! We love having team members that have ideas about how we could improve our systems and processes to give kids more opportunities to thrive.

8. You embrace diversity. You know that the Progress Pathways families and members of your work team may be of a different culture, ethnicity, gender expression, sexuality, brain wiring, religion… or different from you in one of a thousand other ways, and you are committed to seeking to understand and welcome those differences.

9. You have a desire to work with families, knowing that a child’s environment, including their family support system, can make all the difference.

10. And obviously you need to be a university-educated Psychologist who is registered with AHPRA and able to work in Queensland, Australia… but you already knew that, right?

This role would be a great fit for a Psychologist who is Educational and Developmental trained, has an interest in working with disabilities, has a strong family-centred approach and is confident in completing appropriate standardised assessments when required. If you tick some but not all of those boxes, but are interested in the role, please still apply.

While I expect intelligence, energy, organisation, resourcefulness and a get-it-done attitude… What I don’t expect is perfection.

Position Start Date: We have kids ready to see you, when can you start?

Our team works well by following systems and processes. In fact, just to prove that you are detail-oriented and can follow procedures when you apply for this position in the subject line of the email or uploaded application you must include “Bec! It’s me you are looking for!”. Yep, that’s our little trick to sort out the people who blanket send their resume to anyone and everyone, from the folks (that’s you) who are truly interested in this position.

I’m looking to bring our new Psychologist on board as soon as possible (the kids are waiting!), but I will spend the necessary time to find the best fit both in abilities and culturally. One thing that will give you a BIG leg up (but is optional) is to send a quick video along with your resume. In your video tell me why you think you’re perfect for this job and why you will rock this position. This is purely for me to get a sense of your personality. And if you decide not to send a video (that’s ok), please tell me why you chose not to send in a video.

I can’t wait to meet you!
