About the role

We are looking for a 2022 new graduate, HP1 Social Worker to join our busy and innovative Social Work Team. This position is only open to students who completed their studies in 2022 and have not commenced professional work since graduation. You will have the opportunity to develop skills working with adults in an acute hospital setting under the close supervision of an experienced social worker.

Social Workers at Calvary Public Hospital are employed under generalist positions and are supported to develop expertise with a robust program of professional development, group and external individual supervision and rotations to areas of interest in the hospital. External cultural supervision is also provided for staff who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders, and their direct line managers.

Areas of social work service include:

Critical Care (ICU/CCU and Emergency)
Women and Children (Antenatal care, Maternity and Special Care Nursery)
Medical and Stroke
Surgical, Palliative Care and Hospital in the Home
In patient Mental Health

Currently the Department is comprised of a Social Work Team Leader, HP3 Senior Social Workers and Psychologists, HP1/2 Junior Social Workers and Psychologist and Aboriginal Liaison Officers under the management of the Director of Social Work and Psychology. A solicitor is also co-located with the Department under the Health Justice Program. 

All staff have access to external professional supervision paid for by the Department, peer supervision and education through skills workshops, 1:1 mentoring with an experienced social worker and regular internal and external professional development opportunities.  All social workers in the Department attend the Donate Life Introductory Donation Awareness Training (IDAT) Workshop and Palliative Care Education through PEPA as well as accredited domestic and family violence and suicide prevention training as part of their orientation to hospital social work.  We are committed to ensuring our staff receive the support they need to become confident and capable practitioners.

Key Responsibilities

  • The delivery of clinical social work services to inpatients at Calvary Public Hospital Bruce including assessment, crisis/supportive counselling, therapeutic brief intervention, case management, consultation and referral.
  • Administrative duties including preparation of reports and maintenance of records.
  • Participate in professional development, staff education and training opportunities and provide in-service training to other staff as appropriate.
  • In consultation with the multidisciplinary team, contribute to care and action plans that empower patient’s ability to continue to live independently, respecting patient self-determination and safety requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities/ research activities as directed
  • Participate in weekend and after hours rosters if required
