Where you’ll be working
The Illawarra Community Mental Health Rehabilitation Service (ICMHRS) is a community based mental health service for consumers aged 16-64 residing in the Illawarra who experience significant mental health concerns. The purpose of the rehabilitation service is to provide education, interventions and advocacy to promote independence, personal strengths and recovery for consumers of our service.  

What you’ll be doing

Working within a multidisciplinary team, the Peer Worker will draw upon their personal lived experience with a mental health issue to provide recovery oriented interventions, lived experience counsel and advocacy to consumers, carers, and multidisciplinary staff of the Illawarra Community Mental Health Rehabilitation Service. The position works with consumers in both an individual and group setting to facilitate recovery through the development of skills, strengths and capacity for successful independent community living.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed an up-to-date course of a COVID-19 vaccine (3 doses for Category A roles, 2 doses for Category B roles) which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW. Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Please provide proof of vaccination if available.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Personal lived experience of a mental illness, with willingness and demonstrated ability to utilise the lived experience to support others in their own mental health recovery journey.
  2. Certificate IV in Peer Work (or enrolled in and currently studying Cert IV Peer Work).
  3. Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Recent experience as a peer worker in Mental Health setting (student placement experience will be considered)
  5. Demonstrated commitment to the incorporation of Mental Health Recovery principles into day to day practice..
  6. Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  7. Demonstrated computer literacy skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office and health applications.
  8. Current NSW driver’s licence (Class C – unrestricted).
