The role

The Alcohol and Other Drugs Support Worker role provides local Aboriginal men 18 years and over experiencing substance misuse issues with the prevention, early intervention, group support, basic counselling, and referral to specialist services including treatment and care coordination and ongoing support. 

A particular focus is placed on reducing the uptake of alcohol and other drugs by Aboriginal men and empowering and motivating the community in making positive changes in their lives.

The ideal person for this role

Essential

  • Minimum Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs or Diploma in Community Services and 2 years work experience in Community Services and a willingness to undertake Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs training.
  • Knowledge of and affinity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, Community, and community control.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of intergenerational challenges faced by Aboriginal men
  • Sound knowledge of Balit Murrup (Strong Spirit), the social and emotional wellbeing framework.
  • Case management skills and understanding of strength-based models.
  • Sound communication, writing, and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Cultural Respect and applying this to practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Identify as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal men experiencing AOD issues.

Sound knowledge of Cultural Safety in practice and a willingness to learn.
