About the role

The First Nations Senior Clinical Advisor forms part of the broader First Nations Wellbeing and Engagement division and will report directly to the National Manager, First Nations Wellbeing & Healing. As a step towards the delivery of culturally informed care, headspace is committed to supporting clinicians’ cultural knowledge when working with First Nations young people, families, and communities across Australia.

This role will assist in the ongoing development of the First Nations graduate program, the development of Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) resources , and will provide strong leadership support in the recruitment of First Nations Allied Health Graduates.

A key function of the role will be building relationships with universities across Australia, key stakeholder engagement with representative bodies in the Aboriginal community-controlled health sector and headspace Centres to support and strengthen their cultural capability.

This position is offered until 30 June 2023, in line with the current funding term.


Who we’re looking for

  • It is an essential operational requirement that this position is occupied by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person*
  • Approved tertiary qualifications in social work, health, mental health, or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the value of First Nations approaches to healing and wellbeing, and the ongoing impacts of colonisation underpinned by the recognition of First Nations concerted resistance and survival.
  • Proven track record working with First Nations people and representatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide cultural supervision, mentoring and workplace support.
  • Demonstrated reflective practice skills and passion for professional growth.
  • Demonstrated understanding of some of the challenges that First Nations early career trainees and clinicians may face in their work in a headspace service, and of the strengths that they may also bring to their work.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions, problem solve, and risk manage complex situations involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to liaise and build meaningful and sustainable relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team, to support and build relationships and engage external stakeholders.
  • Capacity to travel to Melbourne and regional and remote areas as required.
