JOB DESCRIPTION

About the Role

The Navigator program supports young people 12-17 years who have disengaged from education (30% attendance or less over 13 weeks). It provides intensive case management and assertive outreach to support disengaged learners to return to education. The program is delivered in partnership with Anglicare Victoria within the Barwon region to work closely with local schools and Department of Education and Training (DET).

The Youth Counsellor will work within an integrated team of Youth Services professionals to support young people and their families to address the barriers and risk factors for attending and engaging in education. The Youth Counsellor will complete psychosocial assessments to identified young people and provide short term interventions and counselling with the aim to reduce their barriers to school engagement.

The key objectives of this role are:

  • Engage, assess, and provide initial support to young people and families to assist in addressing mental health concerns and support to further access headspace Geelong and external mental health supports
  • Provide a range of interventions to address mental health concerns using theoretical frameworks and evidence-based interventions including; counselling, psychoeducation and safety planning.

  • $88,959 p/a (pro-rata) + super + salary packaging

About You

To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • Qualification or equivalent in Psychology, Social Work, or Counselling and experience in working with young people including demonstrated skills in the provision of psychological counselling that is developmentally appropriate and time limited.
  • Demonstrated skills related to an ability to engage, assess, and provide brief intervention support.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation and evidence-based interventions for high prevalence youth mental health issues including relevant AOD or Dual Diagnosis/Dual Disability experience.
  • Experience networking and referring clients to internal and external services in a collaborative and supported approach.
  • Understanding of the purpose and expectations of the Victorian Child Safe Standards and demonstrated commitment to contributing to a child safe organisation in both practice and culture.
  • Current Victorian Drivers Licence
