Iona College is inspired by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the life of St Eugene de Mazenod. Iona is an independent Catholic Boys School, owned and administered by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. It is located in the Brisbane Bayside suburb of Lindum and caters for 1,800 students from Years 5 to 12 inclusive.
Iona College is seeking a part-time School Psychologist/Counsellor to assist students, parents and teachers four days per week in Term 1 2023, with potential for further ongoing opportunities later in the year. As the successful candidate, you will have a passion for education and will model, foster and promote the Catholic values and ethos, including that of the Oblate Charism.
The Psychologist/Counsellor will work collaboratively under the direction of the Senior Psychologist/Senior Counsellor and will provide a range of high-quality direct and indirect services to the school community. The Psychologist/Counsellor will apply ethical counselling techniques designed to enhance the mental health, behaviour, personality, social competency and ability to access the curriculum of the students or assist in overcoming difficulties in these areas. These techniques include, individual, group, and family support as appropriate to the needs of clients and mindful of the College’s resources.
As a member of the College staff, the School Psychologist/Counsellor is expected to carry out all duties in a manner consistent with the principles and values of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and contribute positively to the aims and objectives of the College’s Strategic Management Plan.
As the successful candidate you will be required to:
- Provide high-quality counselling and support services to students of the Iona community and their families.
- Provide advice as regards the psychological and educational needs of students to families, staff, and administration as appropriate.
- Ensure adherence to the Student Protection Policy of Iona College and relevant Child Protection Legislation.
- Liaise with Diverse Learning staff in regards students with special needs.
- Within the limits of confidentiality and in accordance with the Privacy Act, liaise with appropriate stakeholders mentioned above and include the Iona Leadership Team as appropriate in order to support the emotional welfare of students and their families.
- Develop appropriate professional networks to support the primary duties and liaise with outside professionals as appropriate.
- Ensure appropriate archiving and case management processes in line with legislative requirements.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and privacy to ethical and legal standards.
- Provide crisis intervention services as part of the Critical Incident Management Team at the College.
To be considered for this role you should have:
- Hold tertiary qualifications relevant to the position
- Registration with AHPRA is essential to meet the requirements of the role in maintaining and continuing registration
- Demonstrate an understanding of wellbeing and positive psychology practices
- It would be advantageous to have experience in providing counselling to children from the age of ten years and adolescents to the age of eighteen years, and their families.
- Adhere to the APS Code of Ethics
- Have an ability to work with minimal direction under professional supervision
- Have a high level of personal integrity and confidentiality.

Hours of duty are 4 days per week, Monday to Thursday, per the Guidance Counsellor (Teacher) provisions. There may be some flexibility with the days you work.
The position is classified as a Guidance Counsellor (Teacher) in the Catholic Employing Authorities Enterprise Collective Agreement Religious Institute Schools of Queensland. Teacher qualifications are not required if you are a registered Psychologist.
Salary will be negotiated based on previous experience and qualifications.
