JOB DESCRIPTION

SEDA College SA is an independent, co-educational senior secondary college (Year 11 and Year 12) designed to engage, educate and empower young people through the power of sport, as they transition from school to employment or further education.

SEDA College SA delivers the SEDA Model, which achieves quality learning outcomes by integrating students’ interests and personalised curriculum with hands on learning that is embedded in the sport industry, alongside peak sporting partners.  This nurtures work-ready, mature, resilient and capable young people who, on completing their SACE and VET, are empowered through a range of pathway choices in further education and/or employment.

Due to increasing enrolments and our fully inclusive approach, we are currently seeking a qualified and motivated professional to join our team for 2022 in the role of:

Counsellor/Social Worker/Youth Worker 

2 x part time role/s commencing in mid-January (0.8 FTE for 40 weeks per year, initial 12 month contract with possible extension, subject to funding)

The ideal applicant will be a qualified and experienced Youth Worker, Counsellor or Social Worker.

We welcome innovators and creative thinkers who can identify and implement new ways of working in the education space.

Experience working with young people in an education, sport or community setting with demonstrated capacity to build rapport and work with secondary students will be highly regarded.

You’ll be a self-starter with excellent written communication and presentation skills. You’ll enjoy connecting with young people through the delivery of proactive well-being programs.

You will work across a number of sites, so you will have a current and valid Driver’s License and your own, reliable vehicle.

 

Competencies, Knowledge & Skills 

  • Highly developed counselling and assessment skills.
  • Extensive experience in working with adolescents and their families.
  • Excellent understanding of mental health issues which confront adolescents, their families and schools.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills with a range of people including students, parents, guardians, staff and external professionals.
  • Customer service focus with an attention to detail.
  • Understanding of legislation and experience in the implementation of the relevant Acts of Parliament relating to child protection.
  • Time management skills.
  • Ability to affirm the unique worth of each student.
  • Advanced interpersonal, communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to reflect and evaluate counselling and/or teaching practices. 
  • Understanding of occupational health and safety and anti-discriminatory practices. 
  • Understanding of cultural differences and considerations.

 

Key duties include:

  • Provide a specialised personal and educational counselling service for students across the College, referral to outside professionals as appropriate.
  • Support teachers with pastoral care responsibilities by providing in-servicing of staff in social, emotional or school safety issues.
  • Engage in counselling of students on a one-to-one basis, referring to outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Lead the delivery of regular student wellbeing sessions.
  • Consultation with school staff regarding the mental health and wellbeing of individual students.
  • Participation in support teams providing individual and group programs for students.
  • Liaison with external mental health professionals and agencies.
  • Consultation and advice regarding mental health.
  • Compiling termly reports and presentations to key stakeholders.

 

Administration

  • The maintenance of accurate, secure and confidential case files and statistics.
  • Quality, accurate writing of various confidential student reports.
  • Data collection and interpretation.
  • Termly summary and reports.

 

Pastoral

  • To maintain confidentiality in respect of students and their parents at all times. To regard information learned about students and families in the school as strictly confidential.
  • Be aware of special/additional needs, cultural, linguistic, religious, gender, language diversities and socio-economic differences and treat each child with dignity and respect.
  • To contribute, on an individual or collaborative basis, to the planning and provision of workshops and programs for staff, students and parents to support understanding of essential and/or current issues.
  • To support staff in the process of identifying and responding to students ‘at risk’.
  • To provide educational programs for students, staff and parents to support student wellbeing issues.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of relevant school policies, procedures and programs with a focus on enhancing the wellbeing of staff, the school community and students, particularly those at risk.
  • Attend and support College activities such as parent education and information nights, camps and others. From time to time, these may occur outside normal working hours.
  • To promote a positive and supportive college culture.
