The New Opportunity

This is a unique and rare opportunity for an experienced Mental Health Practitioner (psychologist, counsellor, Aboriginal health worker or social worker) to join our organisation in a role delivering mental health services for adults, youth and families in the Sunshine Coast region.

This role delivers mental health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing mental health issues through individual, family, and group modalities.

You will also provide psychological counselling, suicide prevention and support services, and NDIS Recovery Coaching.

This position will work in partnership with other REFOCUS programs and services as well as other community-based organisations.

Primary Role: REFOCUS Mental Health Practitioner

Work Location: Nambour, Sunshine Coast

Employment Type: Permanent part time (34 hrs)

Salary Range: $80,000 – $120,000 depending of qualifications and experience

Reports To: REFOCUS Recovery Team Coordinator

Qualifications & Experience:

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualifications in either Psychology/Counselling/Social Work/Aboriginal Health – with appropriate post graduate qualifications including mental health accreditation
  • Sound knowledge of mental health assessment, risk assessment and safety planning, counselling theory and practice, and a minimum of 2 years experience in counselling (focused psychological strategies)
  • An understanding of individual counselling practices and contemporary methods, evidenced based psychological interventions
  • Experience providing counselling to clients with complex mental health issues including trauma as well as clients with multiple mental health diagnoses
  • Must be accredited with or eligible for immediate registration as a member of a relevant professional membership body
  • Client focused practitioner, with demonstrated experience in fee-for-service consultancy
  • Significant experience in conducting counselling with perpetrators and survivors of family violence will be highly regarded
  • A proven self-starter, with an ability to maintain professional independence and the ability to work in a self-directed manner
  • Personal commitment to professional development
  • Capacity to meet deadlines and work within specified timeframes
  • Computer literacy is essential

Desirable:

  • Professional registration with APHRA or AASW
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities and understanding of the social, cultural, and political factors impacting these communities
  • Experience in education, or preventative programs and group work
  • Knowledge and experience in NDIS
  • Relevant lived experience

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provision of primary consultation, which includes the initial intake and assessment interview
  • Provide culturally appropriate and focused psychological strategies and counselling interventions to youth, adults, and families
  • Provide NDIS Recovery Coaching to NDIS participants
  • Facilitate group mental health activities and link in with other REFOCUS universal programs (i.e. Mens Group) on a needs basis
  • Ensure professional and ethical management of client case load
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with local organisations and referring agencies
  • Refer clients to other REFOCUS programs, general practitioners and other external specialist agencies as required
  • Make an active contribution via case presentations, through attendance at organisational in-house professional development
  • Participate in relevant meetings and supervision
