CRISIS CARE COUNSELLOR/ADVOCATE 

CASUAL  AFTERHOURS – East Gippsland 

Crisis Care Counsellor/Advocate Role 

Position:

To provide timely and effective crisis intervention to people who have been sexually assaulted within the past two weeks and who present within the Outer Gippsland region. 

To provide relevant information to assist the person who has experienced sexual assault in making informed decisions and where appropriate to advocate on their behalf. 

Position Requirements 

Participate in the GCASA on-call after hours roster either weeknights (Mon 5pm to Tue 9am, Tue 5pm to Wed 9am, Wed 5pm to Thurs 9am, Thurs 5pm to Fri 9am) or weekends (Fri 5pm continuous until 9am Mon). 

Provide crisis care to people who have recently experienced sexual assault, their families and/or significant others, including crisis interventions, psychological first aid, advocacy, support, risk assessment and appropriate referrals. 

  • Provide information on 
  • Reporting options 
  • Forensic and other relevant medical requirements 
  • Options for further counselling, support and assistance 
  • Liaise with the Sexual Assault Crisis Line 
  • Record casework information and statistics 
  • Attend quarterly after hours workers meetings 
  • Maintain strict privacy and confidentiality requirements 
  • Other duties as required 
  • Abide by current GCASA crisis care protocols. 
  • Be familiar with, and competent in, culturally appropriate assessments, interventions and support. 

Key Selection Criteria. 

1. Understanding of the nature of sexual assault. 

2. Understanding of the impact of sexual assault on victim/survivors. 

3. Demonstrated assessment skills. 

4. Demonstrated understanding of psychological first aid and experience in crisis intervention.

5. Demonstrated advocacy skills. 

6. Demonstrated ability to work competently and autonomously in challenging situations. 

7. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment. 

8. High level interpersonal and communications skills. 

9. Current driver licence and access to a reliable vehicle (for on-call purposes). 

10. Commitment to weekday or weekend roster, including public holidays if it falls on your roster. 

11. Live within 45 minutes travel time of Bairnsdale Regional Health Service’s Hospital. 

12. Provision of a current National Police Check and a Working with Children’s check. 

Desirable but not essential for Performance of the Position 

Experience in working with: 

  • Young people and families 
  • People with psychiatric or intellectual disabilities 
  • People from culturally and linguistically diverse communities 
  • People from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities 
  • Experience in working with interpreters 
  • Knowledge about relevant health and legal issues 

 

OTHER RELEVENT INFORMATION 

 

Training will be provided by GCASA with regard to specific requirements to perform the role. 

A six-month probationary period applies. At the conclusion of this period a performance review will be held with the Senior Clinician. At this time a decision will be made to offer permanent employment or to cease employment with the agency.
