At Our Mindful Youth, we provide Allied Health services to support young people to come home to themselves, and develop the skills needed to fulfil their potential.
Our Mindful Youth provides Occupational Therapy, Art Therapy and Counselling services that support children, adolescents and adults in Geelong and surrounding communities, with a focus on psychosocial health and wellbeing. Our 1:1 sessions and group programs provide our clients with a safe space to access skill building programs that promote creativity, communication and connection. In promoting this with our clients, we increase opportunities for social interaction, a sense of community and belonging, positive experiences at school and at work and time for leisure and self care (to name a few).
About the role
This is a casual role starting with hours across Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays with potential for increased days of work, and commences in January 2023.
The Art Therapist position provides quality client-focused throughout the intervention process; ensuring a holistic approach to the client, their family and carers. The Art Therapist is responsible for the implementation and contribution of Art Therapy 1:1 sessions and group’s within Our Mindful Youth. The position will contribute to the emotional, social and psychological wellbeing and enjoyment of clients. The Art Therapy Program is a program that aims to enhance and build upon the lives of clients attending sessions, using art and artistic expression to achieve this. The program goals are to enhance and provide positive art experiences that foster, enhance and develop individual’s emotional, physical, creative, expressive and sensory experiences using art as the conduit.
The Art Therapist aims to create a stimulating and satisfying art program pursuing the interests, abilities and likes of all engaging with the program. Creative expression created through art based experiences will foster and support art ‘in’ and art ‘as’ therapy for clients attending. This successful applicant will work with a variety of people with mental and/or physical disabilities. We work with clients at their place of preference, whether this is in their home, workplace or other preferred location. However, office space can be made available through Our Mindful Youth when required.
Scope of role:
- Has sound knowledge of mental health conditions, cognitive disorders and neurological disorders, and their impact on a client’s function.
- Has a willingness to extend knowledge of common client diagnosis.
- Demonstrated ability to work with people with mental health conditions, cognitive disorders and neurological disorders.
- Demonstrated ability to use a variety of art media to achieve therapeutic goals.
- Is capable of working alone, directly with an Allied Health Professional, or in teams whilst facilitating Art Therapy based interventions.
- Accurately documents client progress and maintains documents as required.
- Commitment to and willingness to participate in continuing training and education related to the area of employment.
- Demonstrates a capacity to work flexibly across a broad range of therapeutic and program related activities.
- Prioritises work and accepts responsibility for outcomes of their accountabilities.
- An understanding of, and capacity to deliver a high standard of client centred care.
- An inherent understanding/familiarity/exposure to mental health services and philosophy.
- Has knowledge and application of relevant Acts / Legislation, ie. Privacy, OH&S.
- Assists in the education of clients within defined areas of practice.
- Participates in professional development opportunities.
- Has a basic understanding of the Accreditation Standards and processes.
- Able to use a range of information technology applications (Email, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Qualifications and requirements:
- Bachelor Degree or Masters Degree in Art Therapy.
- Registration with ANZACATA or an equivalent registration body.
- Holds a current Victorian Drivers Licence, National Police History Check, and Working With Children Check.
- Has excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Holds Allied Health Practioner’s insurance, including professional indemnity and public liability cover.
