About BDAC

The Bendigo & District Aboriginal Cooperative (BDAC) is an ACCO (Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation) registered as a member under the umbrella of VACCHO (Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation) and represented nationally through NACCHO (National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation).

BDAC provides a range of specialist services for clients based primarily in the Dja Dja Wurrung including Health and Wellbeing services, Family and Community Services and Corporate services.

About The Program 

The BDAC Family Safety Team provide services and programs for Community members who have been, or are currently affected by family violence.

We work with men, women, children and families as a whole, in the areas of healing, case management, therapeutic work and prevention.

Our work focuses on safety of the whole family, including working in a culturally safe way. We do this by identifying individual and family strengths, coming from a trauma informed approach. Connection with Culture, Country and Community is central to our work.

The Position

The Specialist Family Violence Practitioner is an integral member of the Safety and Response Team within the Family Safety and Healing Program, providing culturally safe case management to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service users and their families. 

The team also provide secondary consultation and support to other BDAC programs to support families who are impacted by family violence.

Some Key Responsibilities

  • To provide risk assessment, safety planning and case management to families and/or individuals who are currently, or have previously, experienced family violence.
  • To connect and support engagement of Community members to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. 
  • To ensure individuals and families have their safety needs supported, alongside opportunities to enhance their wellbeing and healing needs, through connection to other BDAC services. 
  • To participate in client care team or professional’s meetings, advocating for the safety and wellbeing of Community members engaged with the Family Safety Program. 

About You 

  • Experience in family violence risk assessment and safety planning for women and children. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Culture and the ACCHO environment. A commitment to providing culturally safe service to Community members and continuing to develop your understanding of the experiences of Aboriginal people, specifically the direct relationship between colonisation and intergenerational trauma. 
  • High level case management of families in crisis and who have experienced trauma.
  • A commitment to working within a team environment, participating in team meetings, supervision and planning as well as co-working with other BDAC workers to best support individuals and their families. 
  • Strong computer skills, ability to use a range of software and IT based reporting systems
  • Uses initiative, creativity, and has an ability remain motivated when working autonomously. 

Mandatory Education, Training and/or Competencies 

  • A recognised Social Work Degree or Community Services qualification, and/or extensive relevant work experience would be highly regarded.
  • Professional comprehensive training in MARAM would be highly regarded.
