headspace Penrith, Mount Druitt and Parramatta deliver the headspace Youth Early Psychosis Program. The headspace program offers an “open door”, easily accessible, early intervention service for young people wishing to obtain support for mental health or substance use issues. The headspace Early Psychosis program is a specialist service which focuses on providing comprehensive services to support young people who are at risk of developing a psychotic illness, or those who have experienced a first episode of psychosis.

Role Overview:
The Family Therapist is responsible for upskilling and educating staff in the provision of family work and family therapy. It is a crucial component of the EPPIC model (Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre), ensuring consistent delivery of family inclusive practice, and compliance with EPPIC model fidelity. The Family Therapist will aim to increase staff confidence and competence in family inclusive practice.
Some duties of the role are:
- Provide education and training to staff in the provision of family work, family inclusive practice, and therapy aimed at increasing staff confidence and competence.
- Deliver quality education and training to staff by way of in- services; written resources; modelling and one to one supervision and consultation.
- Provide family therapy directly to young people and their families accessing the program.
- Directly work with family members and young people in a time-limited family therapy setting.
- Provide group-based information sessions to families about psychosis from a family systems perspective.
Selection Criteria:
- Qualifications in Psychology or Occupational therapy of Nursing or Social Work with AHPRA membershipr or eligibility to AASW
- 3 or more years experience in clinical practice within the mental health field, preferably with young people experiencing early psychosis or a first episode psychosis, and their families.
- A high level of problem-solving and negotiation skills and demonstrated ability to consult, liaise and negotiate with team members, other professionals, and external agencies.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of early psychosis rationale and principles including the developmental stages of young people and the effect that the first episode of psychosis has on development.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and function autonomously while being able to work in a multidisciplinary team effectively.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act and the Children (2007) and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act (1998).
- Demonstrated commitment to clinical supervision, education, training, and ongoing professional development and to contribute to clinical staff learning.
- Current Drivers Licence
