Job title: Shelter Lead

Reports to: General Manager 

Location: Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter

Number of direct reports: 2-4 (caseworkers)

HKWS is a charitable organisation with a mission to be a best practice women’s shelter in Northern Sydney responding to women and families in crisis and working with the community towards education and prevention of domestic and family violence.

In collaboration with Women’s Community Shelters (WCS), HKWS is dedicated to supporting and empowering homeless women through local community fundraising and philanthropy, we have established a 6 bedroom shelter accommodating women, with or without children, who are escaping family and domestic violence.

Annually, we will provide safe, temporary accommodation (up to three months) for approximately 36 women. The primary purpose is to help these women develop self esteem and life skills in order to create a better future. 

The role:

The purpose of this role is to provide supervision of staff and co-ordination of the service, notably: 

  • Ensure service delivery, service support and monitoring of case management within the WCS framework, policies, processes, and tools.
  • Supervision, support, and development of the HKWS casework team ensuring adherence to quality requirements, policies and procedures including rostering and time management
  • Develop and maintain links with accommodation and housing services and other relevant services and the community.
  • Aim to develop and maintain a service of quality that is a place of safety, security, comfort, and confidentiality for clients.
  • Provide updates and reports to the Operations Manager and Board as relevant.

Qualifications

Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent years in experience in a similar role.

Essential Criteria                           

  • A developed understanding of current issues in women’s homelessness, including current practices in the NSW context of responses to domestic and family violence
  • Demonstrated experience in working with clients from culturally diverse backgrounds including using telephone interpreting services
  • A sound and developed understanding of the principles of case-management, trauma-informed care and client-centric approaches 
  • 5 years + and recent experience in managing staff, including professional development and supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively and collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, 
  • Current NSW Driver’s License
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Ability to attend to on-call matters and supporter events out of normal office hours

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in managing clients with mental health issues & knowledge of referral pathways and procedures
  • Knowledge and understanding of funding streams, including community fundraising
  • Sound computer skills, including Microsoft Office and case-management software
  • Process payroll for shelter staff using Keypay (training available)
  • Writing grant applications
