The Banatjarl Strongbala Wimun Grup (BSWG) is part of Jawoyn Association and was established formally in 2003. The BSWG is made up of women members who live on Jawoyn Country and whose vision is to share, teach and transfer traditional cultural knowledges and skills towards family wellbeing, connection and healing. “Strongwan Wimun, Strongwan Kultja, Strongwan Femli”.
Jawoyn Association Aboriginal Corporation is a Not-for-profit striving to improve the cultural, social and economic well-being of the Jawoyn people, while always caring for country. We represent and support the Jawoyn people and country through our human services, land management, cultural and business enterprises. Jawoyn traditional land stretches across 50,000 square kilometres in the Northern Territory.
Your new role
A core focus is on Katherine town, Rockhole, Kalano, Binjari, Gorge Camp, Barunga, Beswick, Manyallaluk including Banatjarl Family Healing Centre. This position is part of the 5-year funded program ‘Country is Medicine’ providing Family Support Services in partnership with Territory Family Housing and Communities (TFHC).
Based on the long held strategic vision led by the Banatjarl Strongbala Wimun Grup to actively support women, children, and families this program provides culturally responsive services, embracing culture as a protective factor in keeping children safe – prioritising children in assessment, service delivery and review. We walk alongside families and support family led decision making. This program works alongside TFHC in support of connecting families and supports through the kinship system and support culturally led early intervention strategies that address child protection concerns.
This position is hands on and vital to the efficient running of the Family Support Program. This role works in close collaboration with the program ‘Ngalmuka Healing – Time & Place’ “Safe, Respected and Free from Violence Prevention” Grant.
Some key tasks include:
- Understanding and addressing child protection referral concerns
- Identify supports needed including support referrals
- Outline families hopes and dreams for themselves and their families
- Outline kinship supports including utilising genograms
- Give understanding and clarity in a trusted capacity about the process to reduce fear and lack of engagement, working to best outcomes for the children.
- Case planning will be developed in consultation with TFHC, family and JAAC.
What you’ll need to succeed
The successful applicant must have demonstrated experience working alongside Aboriginal people in their remote communities with demonstrated respect for elders, and cultural values. An understand of the asset of the Banatjarl Strongbala Wimun Grup and supporting other programs of the BSWG and their values is essential. This position is dynamic, rewarding and challenging.
Please address the following selection criteria in your application:
- Demonstrated experience working alongside Aboriginal community groups including families, using a partnership, strength-based and family centred approach to achieve agreed outcomes.
- Knowledge and understanding of the stresses on vulnerable families and the range of family risk and protective factors which impact on child outcomes.
- Team Leadership experience in a related industry such as psychology, social work, social welfare, health, allied health services, youth justice.
- Understanding of relevant Federal and State legislation and how it relates to the care and protection of Children in the NT.
- Knowledge in group processes and facilitation, especially with vulnerable families.
- Proven high level communication and interpersonal skills, including well developed negotiation and conflict management skills, with significant experience working in a team environment to achieve positive health outcomes.
- Experience in government reporting, monitoring and supporting a team on KPI’s and deliverables.
Desirable:
- Qualifications in relevant fields such as Community or Family Services, or relevant equivalent experience
- Current NT Drivers Licence or ability to obtain
