About the ALS
Born out of a protest movement, the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) Limited is the primary legal service for Aboriginal people in NSW and the ACT. Our vision is to achieve social justice and equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families and communities.
It’s an exciting time for the ALS, with both our services and teams growing significantly. About the role
This role is part of the new Legal Assistance for Women program in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter regions. It will have the opportunity to set up a best practice social work service and provide ongoing case management to women at risk of or affected by family and domestic violence.
The Social Worker is part of a team of solicitors, paralegals, community engagement and administration staff that all work together to provide holistic care for our clients.
What you’ll bring to the role
- Identify and be recognised in the community as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander woman – this is an identified position under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act, 1977
- Demonstrated experience in social work, case management or related field
- Demonstrated experience working with women who are vulnerable to or at risk of domestic and family violence
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary team
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to start a social work service from the ground up
- Current NSW driver’s licence with the ability to travel intrastate and carry passengers
- Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people combined with continuing respect and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices when considering service delivery and other support for clients, their families, communities and employees
- Ability to meet deadlines, work without supervision and manage a diverse workload
