About the role

A rewarding opportunity for an Aboriginal Liaison Officer to join the Dementia Centre & Dementia Support Australia (DSA) programs to support the teams to understand the strengths and challenges that exist within local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities when supporting people living with dementia and cognitive impairment. This role will be on a Fixed Term Full-Time Contract until June 2025 with flexibility to work at any of our sites in NSW, NT, VIC, QLD, TAS or SA.

This role will support the Dementia Centre & DSA programs to foster a culturally appropriate environment for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people to access tailored dementia supports.

Responsibilities

  • Primary Lead for the First Nations Lead group who provide service navigation advice and support to local consultants on tailoring dementia care support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Develop, participate and collaborate in Dementia Centre internal and external activities and/or quality improvement meetings to engage with and advocate for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander clients, their families and communities
  • Ensure optimal dementia care outcomes by providing support, advocacy, referral and liaison to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander clients and their carers accessing Dementia Centre Program services, and increasing the uptake of services from these cohorts
  • Work collaboratively with Dementia Centre Programs staff to facilitate meetings with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander groups and stakeholders building purposeful and sustainable relationships
  • Support and lead proactive community outreach, in partnership with your line manager
  • Provide support to internal and external stakeholders via telehealth/video conference and in person

What do we need from you?

  • Successful applicants for this role will identify as Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • Awareness of Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander cultures and having connections with their local Aboriginal community is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in client/customer service -residential and community aged care and dementia care settings
  • Strong organisational abilities, including effective time management and ability to prioritise in a busy work environment
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills with the ability to prioritise multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent stakeholder management
  • A current Australian drivers licence and willingness to travel intrastate and interstate
  • Qualification in relevant field i.e., Cert III or IV in Aged Care services or Enrolled Nurse highly desirable
  • Certificate III or higher in Aboriginal Primary Health Care + Electives/Skills set in Community/Hospital Liaison highly desirable.
