We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Online Counsellor to join our team. As an Online Counsellor, you will provide individualized counselling and psychosocial assessments to young people and their families using digital technologies. Your role will involve supporting individuals in developing care plans, providing evidence-based support, and facilitating access to specialized services. Responsibilities for the role include:
Area 1: Online Counselling
- Conduct semi-structured assessments and surveys to identify needs and level of wellbeing.
- Assist young people in setting self-directed therapeutic goals and engage them in local and national programs.
- Provide ongoing counselling interventions, psychoeducation, care coordination, and therapeutic case management.
- Support individuals and families during times of grief and loss.
- Make appropriate referrals to internal and external resources and networks.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of therapeutic group interventions aligned with significant occasions.
- Ensure the safety and inclusivity of online spaces for users of Canteen Connect and Parenting Through Cancer.
Area 2: Program Development
- Assist in the development and delivery of evidence-based psychosocial interventions and programs.
- Utilize specialist knowledge and clinical expertise to improve clinical processes and documentation.
- Collaborate with National Clinical Advisors to review and enhance client management systems.
Area 3: Teamwork
- Embrace Canteen’s organizational values and prioritize the well-being of children, young people, and their families.
- Participate in fundraising and awareness events.
- Support Canteen’s Strategic Plan and overall organizational goals.
Essential Criteria
- Relevant qualification in counselling, psychology, social work, or a related field.
- Hold or be eligible to obtain accreditation, membership or licensing from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA), the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), The Australian Counselling Association (ACA), The Psychotherapy and Counselling federation of Australia (PACFA), Occupational Therapy Australia (OTA), The Australian Psychology Society (APS) or equivalent national registering body.
- Experience in providing counselling and support to young people and families.
- Proficiency in using digital technologies for online counselling.
Personal Qualities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team and seek feedback from others.
- Knowledge of psycho-oncology and evidence-based interventions is desirable.
Nature of Work
Location: Newtown, Sydney – Flexible working arrangements
Job Type: Max-term Contract ending on 31 December 2023 (with possibility of extension dependent on funding)
Remuneration: $65,000 – $74,000 + Salary Packaging + Superannuation
Working Hours include
AEST: Tues 10am-6pm, Wed 12pm-8pm, Thur 12am-8pm, Fri 10am-6pm, Sat 11am-5pm
The Cancer Hub Online Support is a 6-day service over extended hours: Monday – Friday 10:00am-8:00pm and Sat 11:00am-5:00pm Australian Eastern Standard/Australian Eastern Daylight Savings time. Online Counsellors have structured hours linked to their positions to cover the hours of operation. To enable leave cover, flexibility to cover occasional weekend or out of hours work is required.
Employment Expectations

- Successfully complete and maintain a current National Police Check and Working with Child Check relevant to the individual’s state jurisdiction.
- Undergo an extensive screening process prior to appointment to guarantee the safety of all Canteen’s stakeholders.
- Provide at least two direct referees to ensure a successful reference check is completed.
- Provide relevant copies of professional qualification/s stated on the application.
- Canteen employees are encouraged to have received the recommended doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine.
