School Counsellor

Oakhill College is seeking to appoint a committed and empathetic School Counsellor to provide solutions focused counselling to students. As a School Counsellor you will contribute to the overall development of our students, equipping them with tools and resources to navigate challenges and embrace personal growth.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate experience in the areas of:

• Conduct individual counselling sessions with students to address emotional, social, and behavioural difficulties;
• Provide psychological support to students through individual and group therapy;
• Coordinate or lead group counselling sessions to address common student issues;
• Develop strong rapport with students to overcome boundaries to counselling and establish an effective therapeutic relationship;
• Assess and identify, when appropriate, for students to be referred to other agencies for further assessment or treatment and make this referral, develop and monitor support programs with staff when appropriate;
• Facilitate access to and obtain assessments and documentation required for relevant funding applications.
• Assist in the development and review of Behaviour Management and Individual Learning Plans;
• Offer counselling, psychological support and/or referral to parents/carers of students to support their social, emotional and educational development;
• Maintain up-to-date documentation concerning students and provide reports as required for internal and external purposes;
• Keeping accurate and confidential records of counselling sessions and progress.

The successful applicant will:

• 5 or more years’ experience counselling adolescents is advantageous;
• Hold an appropriate qualifications and/ or memberships;
• Prior school-based experience is preferred but not essential;
• Be available to work across 5 days (ideally) a week during term time;
• Experience administering, scoring and interpreting cognitive, behavioural and mental health assessments, and report writing is advantageous;
• Knowledge of the mandatory child protection reporting procedures;
• Ability to engage students, parents and teachers in the counselling process;
• Experience working in an educational context or in counselling young people;
• Patience, empathy, and a non-judgmental approach to counselling;
• Ability to demonstrate evidence based professionally informed judgement in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues;
• Be an experienced, innovative, and engaging team member;
• Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with students, staff parents and other health professionals;
• Demonstrate a clear understanding and commitment to the Mission of the Catholic School;
• Adhere to the Colleges Safeguarding Standards and Child Protection policies and procedures;
• Be supportive of the Lasallian ethos of the College;
• Be committed to professional growth and development of excellence.
