The Womens Centre FNQ is a community based feminist service that provides a range of support to women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and/or experiencing domestic and family violence. 

This position works within the Supported Accommodation Program, based in the Atherton Tablelands. The Domestic Violence Shelter provides crisis accommodation to women and their children escaping domestic and family violence. 

The DV Support Worker reports to and works under the direction of the Program Coordinator and Manager and within the guidelines and policies set by Womens Centre FNQ Management Committee.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Health or Human Services is preferred.
  • A Blue Card (authorisation by the Commission for Children & Young People to work under 18 year olds) is required.
  • Willingness to undergo a Police Check is required.
  • Current drivers license is required.
  • Computer literacy skills, including Microsoft Office applications is required.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrate skills in providing client centred case management and crisis intervention to women and their children experiencing homelessness and/or domestic and family violence.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the effects and causes of domestic violence. Including knowledge of cultural differences and impacts on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women and children.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the social and political contexts of homelessness from a social justice, gender and anti-racist perspective and the impacts of this for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
  • Demonstrate a high level of written and spoken communication and interpersonal skills. Including the ability to advocate on behalf of clients, work cooperatively within a team and liaise with government and non-government agencies to provide quality client services.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Provide crisis assistance and case management support to women and children affected by domestic and family violence including those residing in the services secure and transitional accommodation. 
  • Provide culturally sensitive and informed casework, information and referrals to clients in accordance with service requirements, values and principles.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate case management strategies. This includes the development of individual case plans with a focus on safety issues, establishing and sustaining safe independent housing and safety for children.
  • Provide appropriate crisis support. This includes providing relevant information, completing referrals and advocacy for women contacting the service.
  • Develop and maintain professional client resources for use in the organisation.
  • Establish and maintain networks and relationships to provide effective service delivery and improve the coordination of co-case management.
  • Maintain cooperative internal relationships and actively work towards a healthy, respectful and collaborative workplace environment and culture.
  • Actively participate in and prepare for supervision, team meetings and case coordination. 
  • Participate in on-call roster.

  • Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award (SCHADS) Level 4.1 ($41.52/Hour)
  • 21 hours per week (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – 9am – 4:30pm).

  • This position is subject to the successful completion of a 3 month probation period.
