The South Australian Huntington Disease Service provides specialist diagnosis, management and counselling for people impacted by Huntington disease. It includes Huntington specific family and individual counselling, research, quality improvement and implementation of novel or innovative clinical practices and provides an expert consultancy service to other health services and the community. The Social Worker position focuses on providing specialised support to patients and families affected by Huntington’s Disease. You will play a critical role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals and their community living with this condition by addressing their unique emotional, psychological, and social needs.
Your responsibilities as the Social Worker within the Service include:
- Mental health, psychosocial, and risk assessments,
- Treatment and care planning,
- Therapeutic interventions,
- Genetic Counselling for Huntington’s Disease Predictive Testing
- And advocacy to maximise client wellbeing.
To be successful within this role, you will have:
- Knowledge of Huntington’s Disease and its unique challenges for the individual and their community,
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills,
- Empathy, compassion, and the ability to work effectively with patients and their families,
- Demonstrated skills in psychosocial assessment, counselling, strengths-based practice, relationship and family therapy, crisis intervention and brief therapy.
To be eligible for this role an appropriate Degree or equivalent qualification which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers is required. For full details, please see the attached Role Description.
