The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) is a free community-based tertiary mental health service provided through the WCHN across South Australia, providing care to those with severe and/or complex mental health needs. CAMHS provides services to: infants / children / young people up to 18 (16 in some areas) for community, statewide and hospital-based services / perinatal women.
The Opportunity
We currently have an exciting opportunity to join the CAMHS Statewide Eating Disorders team as a Peer Specialist/Carer Consultant, OPS2 on a permanent contract, in a part time capacity.
In this role, you will engage, consult with and provide support for children/adolescents experiencing an eating disorder or parents/carers providing support for children/adolescents experiencing an eating disorder.
The Peer Specialist/Carer Consultant by utilising their Lived Experience will support other consumers on their journey towards physical, mental and emotional wellbeing:
- Authentic engagement with consumers to establish a trusting working relationship
- A positive role model and resource, sharing personal experience of managing an eating disorder
- Share recovery skills, strategies and experiences with the individual consumer or carers
- Plan and evaluate educational groups with the aim of promoting recovery, increasing their psychological wellbeing and self-management strategies, in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team
- Facilitate the development of research and continuous improvement in the field of eating disorders and peer work
- Reduce stigma and create awareness

About You
To be successful in this role, you will have lived experience of an eating disorder, demonstrated recovery for minimum of 3 years OR lived experience as a carer of a young person (under 18 years) who has experienced an eating disorder and is in demonstrated recovery for minimum of 2 years.
You will exhibit skills in interacting with people who are experiencing eating disorder behaviours/ and are receiving treatment and be well versed in supporting others who are experiencing mental and emotional distress to feel safe and reduce their levels of distress.
