About the Corporation

Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) is a Community Controlled Organisation and provides a range of services for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people living within the Ovens Murray region.

Our Purpose

MAC was established in 1994 by Local Aboriginal Community members with the aim to have a healthy and proud community through motivation, education and cultural acknowledgment and giving a sense of belonging.

Positions available  

  • 2 x Family Services Practitioner (up to SCHADS Level 4.1 – $41.52ph)

Position Overview
Child and Family Services consists of a range of programs that provides support to families who have dependent children 0-18 years. 

The aim of Child and Family Services is to provide in-home and community interventions with ranging intensities depending on the family needs, in a child-centered, family focused way. 

Family Services aims to support parents to ensure the best and social, emotional, educational outcomes for their children. In addition, these programs focus on early intervention and placement prevention strategies to prevent families meeting Child Protections, including reunification support.

  • Provide quality interventions and services that focus on outcomes to families experiencing vulnerability and the safety and wellbeing of children.
  • Work with families to support reunification or meaningful contact with the child/ren or young people.
  • Provide education and practical support to families to enhance parenting skills and capacity and reduce risk factors impacting the safety of the child/ren or young people.
  • Promote and engage in relationships with Aboriginal controlled organisations and Aboriginal families that promote culture as a safety for children.
  • Provide intensive outreach to families with a focus on reunification and the safety and wellbeing of children and young people within the family home.
  • Actively engage (including outreach visits) children, young people, and families, including those who may be resistant, by being flexible, responsive, strengths-focused, and creative.
  • Work within a collaborative care team approach with members and relevant stakeholders, including Child Protection to promote best outcomes for client.
  • Fulfil the program obligation regarding case load requirements, targets, case recording, statistics, and other data collection.

Key Selection Criteria 

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Welfare, Youth Work, or a related field. 
  • Demonstrated ability to use a range of active engagement strategies with vulnerable and at-risk children, young people, and their families, and be flexible and creative in meeting their needs.
  • An understanding of the social context of child abuse and neglect, and experience in using current theoretical approaches to support positive outcomes.
  • Sound understanding of the Child Protection and welfare system, and experience in collaboration with a range of professionals in a care team approach.
  • Experience in conducting risk and needs assessments. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, time management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to advocate, negotiate and problem solve.
  • Understanding of the community’s cultural diversity and ability to practice with cultural competence and safety.
  • Ability to partake in reflective practice and to be self-directed. Desirable skills, knowledge, and experience Skills in in the delivery of child and family services, substance abuse, child protection, early years, family violence, therapeutic interventions and/or mental health will be an advantage.
