The Role

The Student Wellbeing Coordinator will facilitate the Yalari Wellbeing Program – Baling Bujerum (‘Strong Spirit’). The primary objective of the wellbeing program is to support the development of ‘mental wealth’ and respond to mental health needs across the Yalari student cohort.

All facets of the wellbeing program must consider cultural, historical, social, community, family and individual factors that contribute to the wellbeing of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who are attending boarding school for up to 10 weeks at a time and returning to their home communities for school holidays. Providing culturally safe, child-centred, appropriate, and effective wellbeing interventions, strategies and programs is an essential component of this role.

As the Student Wellbeing Coordinator, you will facilitate appropriate and timely referrals for students and work closely with others in the student support team and our partner schools.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Psychology, Mental Health or a related discipline. We are looking for someone with experience working with First Nations people, who understands the specific mental health and wellbeing needs of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Communication is key to this role. We are seeking someone who can communicate clearly in written and verbal form with a large and diverse range of stakeholders including partner school staff, community organisations, young people and families.

With a large and geographically diverse student cohort at Yalari the Wellbeing Coordinator will require a high level of organisational skill and be able to track student progress using appropriate tools – spreadsheets, lists, databases etc.

Additional Requirements of the position:

1. Availability to work outside of business hours on occasion. The Wellbeing Coordinator will need to be responsive to needs as they arise, with support from the wider team.

2. Availability to attend Yalari camps and activities throughout the year. The Wellbeing Coordinator will facilitate wellbeing sessions at annual year level camps held over weekends.

3. Hold, or have the ability to hold a current Working with Children Card and National Police check.

4. Have a non-restricted driver’s license.

How to apply

Please submit your resume and a one-page cover letter. The cover letter should be tailored to address your suitability as the ‘ideal candidate’. Tell us a little about yourself and why you are interested in this position. Applications will need to follow this process to be considered.

You will have full rights to work in Australia. Appointment to this position is subject to passing a mandatory Working with Children Check and a National Police Check.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply.

Applications will be closed as soon as suitable candidates are identified.
