JOB DESCRIPTION

Wirraka Maya Health Services Aboriginal Corporation is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service designed to ensure our clients’ journey through the health system meets their medical, health, social and cultural needs with a vision that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Pilbara have the opportunity to live a healthy life, with access to culturally appropriate, holistic primary and allied healthcare; social and emotional wellbeing services and education.

The SEWB Worker forms part of the SEWB multi-disciplinary team and works collaboratively with the team. The SEWB Worker will focus on providing support to people in communities to strengthen their social and emotional wellbeing in a variety of ways including connection to health services and culturally appropriate activities.

This position will support and run activities which promote education, prevention and early intervention for people with social and emotional wellbeing issues and associated psychosocial problems such as family distress, unemployment, disability, poverty and trauma.

About You

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • Aboriginality is an essential criterion and is provided for in accordance with section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA);
  • Minimum Certificate IV Community Services (Mental Health, Alcohol and other Drugs, Aged Care or Youth Work) or equivalent  qualification;
  • Proven well developed written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people;
  • Knowledge of evidence based and culturally appropriate approaches to mental health, SEWB and AOD issues within Aboriginal communities;
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to Aboriginal culture and history, and current issues affecting lives of Aboriginal people Understanding of Aboriginal Community Control in the context of health care;
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills including the ability to proactively establish and sustain effective stakeholder relationships;
  • Effective organisational and time management skills including the ability to manage competing priorities;
  • Demonstrated experience in the delivery of programs and activities for Aboriginal people, either in a one-on-one or group setting.
  • Experience in creating and maintaining accurate and up to date case notes;
  • Ability to make appropriate referrals to relevant mental health and alcohol and other drug services and community programs.

Please note: In addition to the above skills and experience, the successful candidate will require a WA Driver’s License, and be required to submit a National Police Clearance (dated within 6 months) and WA Working With Children Check prior to appointment.
