We are looking for Peer Recovery Worker to join the Danjoo team at Royal Perth Hospital- Safe Haven. The Position will work on a part-time basis, 18 per week. The days of work will be Friday, Saturday and Sundays (2pm – 8pm).

Safe Haven at Royal Perth Hospital provides a calm, gentle and quiet space where people can receive early intervention mental health distress management and problem solving support from both Peer workers with Lived Experience, and clinical support staff.

It is designed to work alongside Emergency Departments to improve an after-hours alternative option to people experiencing mental health distress. This model offers face-to-face psychosocial assistance via the peers and connection to service providers in the community to address areas of individual need.

The position of Peer Recovery Worker requires bringing your Lived or Living Experience of Recovery, mental health challenges, AOD issues, family or domestic violence or homelessness, or cultural peer perspective, identifying as a consumer and demonstrating a professional understanding of how to use this to inform work as a Peer. The position requires a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work/Peer Skillset (minimum of 75% completion).

This role is about practicing a recovery through ‘doing’ approach to working alongside clients, carers, and families. Working alongside an individual to identify their existing strengths and resources, as well as to support real choices and promote self-determination. The Peer Recovery Worker position follows the values and principles of Peer practice as outlined in both the National Lived Experience (Peer) guidelines, as well as the WA Framework for the Lived Experience (Peer) workforce. This role is a ‘go to’ service, largely visiting people in their home, community, or place. The role works with people to support them to achieve the changes they want to make in their lives.

The ideal candidate will work with vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals who have been discharged from the care of Royal Perth Hospital to provide a dedicated, multi-agency resourced, clinical and allied health support designed around the known health and social care needs of this group. 

The position will require the successful candidate to work shiftwork (weekend shifts).

Essential:

It is expected that the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • A Lived or Living Experience of Recovery, mental health challenges, AOD issues, family or domestic violence or homelessness, or cultural peer perspective, identifying as a consumer and demonstrating a professional understanding of how to use this to inform work as a Peer.
  • Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (minimum of 75% completion) or completion of Peer Skillset at TAFE.
  • Experience working in a similar or community work setting.
  • A demonstrated understanding of Trauma Informed Practice principles and ability to implement this in day-to-day practice.
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of reliability and contribute to the functioning of the team
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal and de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to model personal wellbeing, safe professional boundaries, and positive unconditional regard for the people you are supporting
  • Understanding of computer skills including Microsoft Office and client reporting system.
  • Knowledge and understanding of diversity, gender and social inclusion, particularly Aboriginal culture.

Candidate Notice: Ruah works with vulnerable clients in a range of health/hospital, public access, and client home locations. As a result, employees are required to have certain immunisations, including for COVID-19 even in the absence of public health orders. The is important for both client and staff health and safety controls. An applicant and/or new employee will be required to provide evidence of their immunisation status in accordance with Ruah’s Immunisation Procedure – a copy of which can be provided upon request.
