Peer Worker Rural and Remote Mental Health

JOB DESCRIPTION

Who we are

Rural & Remote Mental Health (RRMH) is a not-for-profit organisation with charitable status that delivers proactive, preventative, and culturally appropriate programs and services to individuals, organisations, and communities in rural and remote Australia.  We are committed to raising awareness and focusing on mental health, suicide prevention, and early interventions.

Our services are provided under the Commonwealth Psychosocial Support Program (CPSP). Our services are comprehensive and highly personalised because each person’s experience will be different and their needs, as an individual, are unique. Together we set goals and connect individuals with the right people, support services, and opportunities to meet their needs.

About the Opportunity

As a Peer Worker, you will support people accessing our services who have a lived experience of mental health issues to achieve their hopes and dreams. You will play an important part in assisting people to maintain wellness and realise their goals across the Western Downs and Goondiwindi regions.

On a day-to-day basis you will:

  • Listen to and create opportunities and activities that meet the interests and goals of people.
  • Encourage shared learning experiences, and support skill development at every opportunity through self-directed learning, information, and education.
  • Ensure that individual support is provided to a person that accesses RRMH’s services that meet their recovery journey goals and is strengths based and led by the person wherever possible.
  • Be ‘hands on’ and involved in direct service delivery and remote supports.

Lived experience is a person’s experience of mental ill-health and the journey of recovery. We recognise the unique insights, awareness, and opportunities lived experience provides and differentiate between the lived experiences all people have, and those uniquely informed by life altering mental health challenges. We value this experience and believe peer support is a powerful part of the mental health recovery journey. Therefore, our Peer Worker roles are for those willing to use their lived experience and personal recovery to mentor people with mental health issues.

The Benefits

  • Family-friendly and flexible working conditions
  • Opportunities for professional development and training
  • Regular supervision (reflective practice), ongoing 1:1 mentoring, strong team support and a comprehensive induction program
  • Generous leave provisions including attractive remote salary sacrifice options + 3 additional days of annual leave over Christmas/New Year + paid parental leave
  • Employee Assistance Program for confidential wellbeing support

Selection Criteria

  • A relevant degree OR a Relevant Certificate IV or Diploma with 12-months relevant experience OR 2-years full-time experience working in mental health as recognised by RRMH.
  • Must have current Australian Driver’s Licence.
  • A strong commitment to recovery-based practice in the workplace.
  • In-depth knowledge/experience about living and/or working in rural and remote Australia.
  • Understanding of, and ability to effectively use, Microsoft Office and knowledge of data information management systems.
  • Willingness to work from home when not meeting participants face to face and willingness to travel between regional towns.
  • The ability to be self-directed to meet timelines, with excellent communication skills – both through face to face and via electronic channels.
  • Knowledge of local networks (Western Downs and Goondiwindi) and reside in the region.
