Your Opportunity
The YouthBeat outreach team is an exciting service providing practical assistance directly to young people that are homeless or at risk of homelessness in public places and diverting them from risk. The program is well known across Perth and has received recognition in the press for the support provided to Perth’s youth.
Based in Northbridge, you will work on a part-time basis with shifts including Friday and Saturday night from 9pm to 5am on a rotating roster. In this position you will provide information, referrals, and practical support as well as offering follow-up support for clients and their families.
The role will support a 7 day, 24 hour rotating roster with a combination of day and night shifts.
You MUST be available for Friday and Saturday night shifts
Your Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate Youth at Risk (YAR) Initiative shifts including street-based outreach engagement and support vulnerable and at-risk young people in the CBD and Northbridge area between 9pm and 5am on rostered days
- Provide trauma informed, person centred support to vulnerable young people using culturally secure, and solution focused approaches
- Deliver assertive outreach to young people in Perth CBD using a vehicle and foot patrols
- Use your understanding of current youth issues to connect and engage with young people on the street
- Work closely with key external groups and our case managers to ensure the young people you and the team meet, have the best possible support available to them
Requirements for Success
With a significant background in the child, youth & family and/or homelessness or AOD sectors, you will be confident in your support and assessment processes. Other requirements include:
- A Degree or Diploma in Youth Work/ Community Services or a minimum of three years’ experience in a similar role
- Proven assertive outreach work experience in engaging and supporting at risk young people including working with intoxicated young people and people experiencing homelessness
- Experience and ability to work with at risk young people including knowledge of child and adolescent development
- Strong assessment, general counselling, and crisis intervention skills, including working with people experiencing alcohol and other drug use issues, mental health issues, in mental health crisis and families in crisis
- Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office, and ability to adopt Mission Australia’s web-based Information Managements system (training will be provided)
- Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills including report writing and data collection
- Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team
- Full driver licence with no restrictions
