Children and Young Peoples Support Worker Women’s Community Shelters

Women’s Community Shelters is a network of nine shelters for homeless women and homeless women accompanied by children across NSW. We are recruiting for a casual Children and Young Peoples Support Worker to work in a crisis accommodation service at The Sanctuary Shelter in The Hills District. The Sanctuary Shelter provides crisis accommodation to women and children who are escaping domestic and family violence. 

Position is 22.5 hrs over 3 days per week, salary is SCHADS Crisis Accommodation Level 2.1.

The Children and Young Peoples Support Worker (CYPSW) will be expected to create a safe supportive and welcoming environment for children and young people in the shelter and work collaboratively with the case work team to ensure that children and young people in our shelter are engaged with appropriate supports. 

The CYPSW will work with the casework team to ensure a package of support is provided to the young people and their mothers, ensuring sensitivity to cultural needs. The role includes the design and delivery of age and culturally appropriate recreational and play activities within an environment that works within the OCG Child Safe Standards. 

Essential criteria: 

  • Minimum Cert IV in Community Services or similar
  • Demonstrated experience within the community services sector preferably in children’s or youth services. 
  • Knowledge of the dynamics and impact of family violence and abuse and how best to support survivors, including the impacts of trauma on children and young people.
  • An understanding of the Office of the Childrens Guardian Child Safe Standards. 
  • Excellent written and communication skills 
  • Current First Aid Certificate or capacity to acquire one before commencement
  • Working with Children Check or willingness to obtain prior to commencement
  • Current Police Check or willingness to obtain prior to commencement
  • The right to live and work in Australia
