Make a difference to young people and join one of Tasmania’s most innovative primary health services. The Link Youth Health Service (The Link) is a not-for-profit organisation providing free health and wellbeing services to young people aged 12 to 25.
The Link has been providing a range of services to young people in the CBD and surrounds of Hobart and Southern Tasmania for over 30 years, including general health and wellbeing, sexual health, alcohol, and other drugs support and, since 2012, mental health services through our headspace Hobart Centre.
The Link’s vision is healthy and empowered young Tasmanians and we work towards this ambition by engaging with young people and those that support and care for them: family, friends, carers and other community organisations. We believe young people should be at the centre of care and decisions about themselves and we provide safe spaces for them to do this in a non-judgmental and consent-focused environment.
About the Role
The Youth Health Worker will support young people aged 12-25 with issues including mental health, family conflict, homelessness, drug and alcohol use, sexual and reproductive health, relationships, education, and finding a job. The Youth Health Worker will provide brief intervention and supported assistance, and where appropriate, referral to other youth services.
Integral to this role is designing and delivering health promotional messages, using a harm reduction approach when working with young people, assistance connecting with additional support services, and providing community education.
This opportunity is fixed-term up to 0.4 FTE to the 30 June 2024.
Skills, Experience, Qualifications and Certifications
Essential
- Tertiary qualifications in allied health discipline, including Social Work, Nursing, Psychology with a minimum requirement of Certificate IV in Counselling, Community Services, Mental Health or similar.
- Sound experience working in a community, youth-focussed program.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the issues facing young people in Tasmania, particularly accessing appropriate services.
- Demonstrated capacity to work within a harm-reduction framework, with experience in the provision of general brief interventions for young people, including assessment, goal setting, advocacy, shared care, and referral.
- Demonstrated ability to use contemporary information technology for research and maintaining statistical data and client records, including case notes and tasks.
- Experience in design, delivery and evaluation of health promotion and service promotion activities.
- Highly developed interpersonal communication skills; including conflict resolution and negotiation, and the ability to communicate effectively with service users, community groups and organisations, by using a professional standard of written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, autonomously, and to manage competing priorities.
Essential Certifications
Evidence of the following must be provided prior to appointment to the position:
- A current Tasmania Working with Vulnerable People Registration
- A current National Police Check
- A current COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate
- A current Australian Driver’s Licence
