The Asbestos Disease Support Society 

For nearly 30 years, the Asbestos Disease Support Society (ADSS) has been the major provider of support, information and advice to people living in Queensland and the Northern Territory, who are affected by asbestos disease or asbestos exposure. ADSS is a Not-For-Profit Charity with tax deductable gift status and is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit Commission. It is a membership based organisation with approximately 700 members and is governed by a Board of Directors and managed by a General Manager. 

In 2018, the Society also established the Silicosis Support Network to expand support services to people who have been diagnosed with other dust related lung disease such as silicosis. The Network operates on the same long-standing principles and services that has supported those with asbestos related diseases.

The Role 

The successful applicant will ideally have experience in supporting people with life changing illnesses and will deliver high quality services to help sufferers of asbestos and other dust related lung diseases, such as silicosis. The role will include supporting individuals (and their families and caregivers) to understand their condition, treatment/s and support care services to maintain a sense of wellbeing and quality of life. ADSS operates in a small team, mutually supportive environment and you will therefore work closely with your colleagues.

You will achieve these outcomes by: 

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with those affected by a dust related disease.
  • Monitoring and evaluating sufferers throughout their disease progression to determine their current state of mental and emotional health.
  • Delivering community education sessions
  • Maintaining sound data collection practices, evaluation and report writing
  • Referring to and liaising with other health care services to meet the needs of members
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships within the health system to promote the services of ADSS and the Silicosis Support Network. 
  • Maintaining current knowledge of relevant medical research into asbestos/dust related lung diseases. 

Key Attributes 

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to provide support and counselling to Society members who are experiencing health distress
  • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of community support services and eligibility requirements 
  • Advocacy to promote and address the needs of Society members, families and carers
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and evaluation of outcomes
  • Case management skills including undertaking Society member assessments health assessments
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver community education sessions 
  • Capability in the use of IT programs(word, excel, power point)
  • Ability to work autonomously

Essential Qualifications/Professional registration/Other requirements 

  • A degree in Social Work recognised by the Australian Association of Social Work
  • Driver’s License

Travel

ADSS works throughout Queensland, Northern Territory and northern NSW. You will be required to undertake reasonable travel to the meets the needs of ADSS’s clients and stakeholders in these areas. 

Probation

A period of probation of three months will apply.
