Advocate Deakin University Student Association

JOB DESCRIPTION

DUSA is the Deakin University Student Association and is the Student Voice at the university and in the broader community. As a not-for-profit organisation, we support all students whether they study off campus, are undergraduates, postgraduates or international students. DUSA aims at enhancing the student experience at Deakin.

Reporting to the Advocacy Manager, the Advocate supports Deakin’s students with academic and welfare issues by providing face to face appointments, phone, Zoom and email interaction and referrals to internal and external support services. This exciting and challenging role will combine your passion for assisting students with an opportunity to undertake key projects as identified by the team’s operational plan.

Your role is crucial in providing advocacy and welfare support to a broad range of students studying on and off campus at Deakin. You will work autonomously with support from your virtual team and manager located throughout our other campuses. More specifically you will:

  • Provide direct, confidential academic advocacy to students using the university policy framework, identifying factors that impact upon wellbeing and capacity to complete their program of study.
  • Provide timely and accurate advice on a broad range of issues which affect students including Academic and disciplinary issues, as well as making referrals when faced with other personal welfare issues.
  • Work with Deakin stakeholders in addressing any systemic issues, trends or gaps in policy and practices.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate welfare programs designed to alleviate food insecurity amongst Deakin students.
  • Work with other members of the team to deliver campaigns and projects to promote our services and trends observed in service provision.

To be successful in this role you will be tertiary qualified preferably in case management, youth work, social work, or community services together with demonstrated work experience in advocacy, negotiation and conflict resolution.

Ultimately it will be your high attention to detail, excellent communication and inter-personal skills and your ability to work with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds that will guarantee your success. Experience in the Higher Education sector will be highly regarded.

DUSA offers an opportunity to be a part of a diverse and dynamic work environment, team get togethers, contribute your pet to our pet wall, fantastic salary package – 14% super, 17.5% leave loading and 5 weeks annual leave (1 week taken as additional leave at the end of the year).

Applications need only include a resume & cover letter and will close on 10 November 2023.

We recommend applying immediately as all applications will be screened as received and interviews conducted shortly after as we ideally will look to commence the role in December.
