Position Overview:

As a Specialist Worker for Children and Young People, you will play a vital role in providing direct, culturally sensitive services to children and young people residing in our client’s refuge. Your responsibilities will include offering trauma-informed mental health support, counselling, and advocacy, as well as facilitating both group and one-to-one sessions to address the specific needs and concerns of children and their parents. Additionally, you will collaborate with local service providers to ensure families receive comprehensive support, advocate for children and parents, and assist mothers in acquiring skills essential for their children’s healthy growth and development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide trauma-informed mental health support and counselling to children and young people.
  • Connect families with essential services, ensuring holistic support networks.
  • Facilitate group and individual sessions, addressing the unique needs of children and parents.
  • Act as an advocate, linking children and parents with appropriate services and resources.
  • Collaborate with local service providers, ensuring families receive comprehensive, wrap-around support.
  • Assist mothers in gaining skills to promote the healthy growth and progress of their children.

Requirements:

  • Degree Qualifications in Psychology or Social Work.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a similar role, demonstrating an understanding of trauma and its impact on mental health, addictions, and homelessness.
  • Competency in Aboriginal and cultural safety and diversity.
  • Commitment to feminist philosophy, promoting child-centred, woman-focused, trauma-informed practice.
  • Computer literacy in MS Word and MS Office products.
  • Current Driver’s License, willingness to undergo Working with Children Check and National Police Check.
