Youth Focus is a for-purpose organisation that creates brighter futures for young people in Western Australia by offering a range of no-cost mental health services. Established in 1994, Youth Focus delivers innovative and accessible mental health services and programs across Western Australia to help at-risk young people aged 12 to 25. 

A key component of this is our role as the lead agency for a number of headspace centres, including the dynamic and successful satellite headspace Northam located on Ballardong Noongar Country. 

The headspace mission is to collaborate to design and deliver innovative ways of working with young people to strengthen their mental health and wellbeing. headspace Northam is part of a national network of over 100 headspace centres operating across Australia with the vision of all young Australians being supported to be mentally healthy and engaged in their communities. 

  • Fixed-term contract until 31 December 2024, with extension in line with funding 
  • Part-time position (0.6FTE) 
  • Workdays: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (late shift Wednesday ending at 7pm)
  • Travel, accommodation, or relocation allowances considered for the right candidate 

About the Role 

The Clinical Coordinator holds a key leadership position within headspace Northam. The incumbent will work collaboratively with the Centre Manager – headspace Midland and Northam and the headspace Midland and Northam Senior Leadership Teams to provide clinical leadership, line management, training and supervision of a multidisciplinary team, ensuring that day-to-day clinical work is carried out effectively and meets the needs of young people and community within the Northam catchment. The key responsibilities of this role include: 

  • Work under the direction of the Centre Manager to provide youth friendly mental health services to the headspace Northam clients.
  • Manage the day to day operation of the headspace Northam team.
  • In partnership with the headspace Midland and Northam Operations manager, identify gaps or opportunities to continue to support the growth of headspace Northam with the overarching aim of headspace Northam becoming a full headspace site.
  • Provide consultation, liaison and linkage with internal and external service systems; represent the program at external forums and promote the service to key stakeholders.
  • Continue to develop and expand on the networks and relationships between headspace Northam and its Consortium partners and Aboriginal Elders.
  • Oversee and support a comprehensive intake service to young people, community members and professionals seeking services at headspace Northam, including receiving and processing telephone and faxed referrals.
  • Provide clinical leadership and line management, consultation, advice, and expertise to headspace Northam staff in the delivery of mental health care to young people and their supports.
  • Deliver clinical supervision/guidance in accordance with Youth Focus Supervision Policy and provide professional day-to-day support to reporting clinical team members.
  • Respond to incidents and alert the Centre Manager of potential risks and areas of concern as they arise.
  • Provide and supervise the use of psycho-social assessments using the agreed headspace tool, to determine client suitability for ongoing headspace Northam services.
  • Monitor and lead the ongoing delivery and improvement of a high standard of evidence-based care to clients, including appropriate clinical services across the mental health spectrum.

About You 

To be considered for this position, applicants will have: 

  • Tertiary level qualifications in a relevant clinical discipline including psychology, social work, occupational therapy, counselling, or mental health nursing. 
  • Current membership and/or registration with an appropriate professional body. 
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge and experience working with young people of families including those at risk of suicide, depression and/or self-harm, and an understanding of the issues that impact on families and young peoples’ lives
  • Experience in successfully leading/coordinating a team of staff and working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team with the ability to inspire and facilitate team commitment and cooperation
  • Demonstrated experience in preparation of reports with recommendations.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritise and manage multiple and competing work tasks and deliver to agreed deadlines
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a diverse range of people
  • Previous experience in engaging with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and CALD communities in a culturally safe and appropriate manner.
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), problem solving and negotiation skills and demonstrated ability to consult, liaise and negotiate with team members, other professionals and outside agencies.
  • Flexibility in coping with organisational change and demonstrated capacity to be innovative in clinical approaches with young people.
  • ‘C’ class Driver’s Licence and access to a reliable vehicle.  
  • Flexibility to work one late shift a week.
