JOB DESCRIPTION

Sophia Mundi Steiner School is seeking a supportive and empowering Student Wellbeing Officer to join our school community.   The Student Wellbeing Officer will show a passion for encouraging and supporting young people to help them to thrive in an educational setting.  The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal and organisational skills and demonstrate an understanding in providing care and support to young people with diverse needs.   

The role involves monitoring and supporting the wellbeing and welfare needs of all students to allow them to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. 

The Student Wellbeing Officer will implement, in the classroom and across the school a trauma-informed approach that promotes unconditional positive regard for young people with complex and diverse needs.  They will work collaboratively and provide expert educational and wellbeing advice for the staff and education leaders. 

 Qualifications & Other Requirements 

  • A relevant qualification (e.g. degree or diploma in either Psychology, Social Work, Youth Work, Counselling or Education)
  • A current Working with Children Check 

Relevant Award / Hours of Work

The Educational Services (General Staff) Award (MA00076) 2020 applies to this position.  The position has been classified under the Award as Wellbeing Services Grade2, Level 4.1.

This position works during term weeks only.  Non-term weeks, apart from Annual Leave are taken as leave without pay.

Preferred Skills and Experience 

  • Demonstrated skills and experience in the provision of support to young people
  • Demonstrated experience and passion for working effectively with young people, assisting them to manage their emotions and stressors in order to thrive in an educational setting.  
  • Wellbeing support work experience in an educational setting is preferred. 
  • Knowledge of the factors that lead to disengagement from education and the interrelationship of disengagement and wellbeing. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegiately with the team to improve the attendance of students and student re-engagement into the classroom. 
  • An understanding of the impact of trauma on development, behaviour, emotional regulation and engagement in education. 
  • Experience in effective de-escalation of young people in moments of personal distress. 
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of positive behaviour supports and trauma informed practices. Knowledge of the Berry Street Educational Model or Collaborative and Proactive Solutions Model would be advantageous.  
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in building and maintaining strong relationships with students, setting boundaries and assisting young people to meet behavioural expectations. 
  • Knowledge of child safe standards and ability to adhere to them. 
  • Understanding of referral pathways and services available to support students.  
  • Experience or willingness to support with the development of relevant school wellbeing and engagement policies.  
  • Experience or interest in Steiner Education and / or the International Baccalaureate. 
  • Willingness and ability to be able to learn new systems, processes and relevant legislation that are applicable to education providers. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that will allow you to effectively communicate and liaise with staff, students, parents and the community.
