Senior Psychologist Department of Defence

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Role

The Senior Navy Psychologist is responsible for managing a small team of APS and uniformed Navy Psychologists and Psychology Assistants on-base at HMAS Cerberus, located on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria.

The Navy Psychology Section provides psychological support to the Royal Australian Navy’s uniformed workforce and contributes directly to Navy’s capability and national security. Navy Psychology strengthens the Navy workforce by delivering best-practice resilience, organisational and mental health programs and by working with Navy leadership to optimise members’ performance.

The services delivered by a Navy Psychology Section include providing stakeholder advice and liaison, referrals from Command for advice, brief self-referrals from uniformed members for work-related support, mental health training development and delivery, operational mental health screening, critical incident mental health support and organisational interventions.

About our Team

The Navy Psychology Cerberus team provides the full scope of Navy Psychology services to units within HMAS Cerberus, which includes RAN Recruit School and Sailor Initial Enlistment Training schools. Our team works together to achieve a high standard of psychology service provision, liaising regularly with command elements, health providers and other wellbeing stakeholders.

Our Cerberus team consists of an APS EL1 Senior Navy Psychologist, an APS 6 Navy Psychologist, a uniformed Navy Psychologist and a Psychology Assistant. We are a highly professional, close knit team who work together to support each other and the goals of our Section. We are well integrated within the HMAS Cerberus community and supported by the wider Navy Psychology team. We value professional development, strong relationships, high performance, work flexibility and support.

Our Ideal Candidate

This is a civilian (non-uniformed) role, as part of the Australian Public Service (APS) workforce within Navy.

Our ideal candidate has experience in managing teams, or the potential ability, with the willingness to upskill in this area; and is able to anticipate challenges, identify innovative solutions, and act decisively.

A Senior Psychologist will exercise a considerable degree of independence and perform a leadership role. They will exercise sound decision making and judgement to provide expert policy advice. A solution-focused, dynamic, and supportive Senior Psychologist, who can work well within a small team would be ideal for the role.
