STTARS (Survivors of Torture and Trauma Assistance and Rehabilitation Services)

  • Start date – as soon as possible
  • Fixed term full-time contract to 30 June 2025

STTARS is a non-government, not for profit organisation who have been operating in South Australia since 1991. STTARS has no political or religious affiliations.

STTARS provides counselling and support services to people from refugee and migrant backgrounds who have experienced torture or been traumatised as a result of persecution, violence, war or unlawful imprisonment prior to arrival in Australia.

We are currently looking for a full-time (1 FTE) experienced Family Support Counsellor/Advocate to provide early intervention services to families and children from refugee backgrounds. The role is fixed term up until 30 June 2025.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Undertaking evidence informed assessments to assess family safety.
  • Provide trauma-informed counselling and practical therapeutic support.
  • Prepare case plans in partnership with families through assessment of family strengths, needs and risks, focusing on resilience and family relationships.
  • Support families to navigate service systems and develop meaningful connections with other services and community.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology, counselling or related health or social sciences discipline.
  • At least three years of experience in the counselling of children and young people and their families.
  • Current driver’s license.
  • Flexible to work from various work locations as required.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Proven experience in using evidence informed assessment tools to assess family safety and wellbeing and to establish appropriate therapeutic goals with families.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of intergenerational and complex trauma.
  • Proven experience in providing practical and therapeutic support to families, which includes practical assistance, coaching and mentoring, and supporting the development of positive social and community networks.
  • Proven experience in providing case management to families that enhances their capacity and resilience.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to maintain quality client records and data.

Salary is based on the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award (SCHADS) 2010 – Level 5

Appointment to this role is subject to you having / obtaining a current DCSI Child Related Employment Clearance.
